WhatsApp has officially started deploying the username feature, to help users connect without sharing phone numbers, thereby enhancing privacy on the platform.
According to information from the latest updates, this feature is currently deployed in stages and only with a small group of users. This is considered an important step in WhatsApp's strategy to enhance the personalized and secure experience (messaging app belonging to Meta).
In fact, the first signs of username feature have appeared since 2023 through test versions.
Over the past time, WhatsApp has continuously adjusted and improved, with 2025 being considered a key stage before bringing this feature closer to users.
The slow deployment is said to be aimed at ensuring the stability of the system, because WhatsApp currently serves billions of users worldwide.
Any changes related to account identification should be strictly controlled to avoid risks.
To check if the feature is available, users can access the Settings section in the application. If activated, a new item named "Username" will appear. Here, users can create a separate identifier, replacing the sharing of phone numbers when connected.
The noteworthy point is that users can choose names similar to other social media accounts such as Facebook or Instagram, helping to synchronize personal recognition on platforms and Meta ecosystems.
However, WhatsApp also sets strict rules for usernames. Specifically, names must be from 3 to 30 characters long, contain at least one letter and only include lowercase, uppercase, digits, dots or bullet points.
In addition, the name does not start with "www.", does not end with endings like ".com", ".net", and is not dotted at the beginning or end.
The addition of usernames is expected to change the way users interact on WhatsApp, especially for those who do not want to publicize their phone numbers.
This is also a popular trend on many messaging platforms today, where privacy is increasingly prioritized.
Although only in the limited testing phase, this feature is predicted to be soon widely deployed in the near future, opening up a more flexible and secure way of connecting for WhatsApp users worldwide.
