Wikipedia has just announced plans to help this online full-page encyclopaedia site continue to operate stably amid the AI wave, despite reduced access.
The Wikimedia Foundation - the running organization of Wikipedia has just issued a call after a series of announcements about reducing access. Wikimedia Foundation says AI developers need to use responsible content, specify the source and access data through paid Wikimedia Enterprise products. The paid version helps AI companies use data on a large scale without overloading servers, while supporting Wikipedia's nonprofit mission.
Google previously discovered AI bot collecting data while impersonating users, leading to unusual traffic in May and June. Meanwhile, users' page views decreased by 8% compared to the same period last year.
Wikipedia currently guides AI developers to source content to ensure contributors are recognized. The post emphasized: Platforms need to be transparent in information sources and create access opportunities for everyone.
Earlier this year, Wikimedia announced an AI strategy to support editors, using AI for boring tasks, automating translations and editing assist, rather than replacing humans.
