The YouTube app on TV is expected to undergo a major overhaul to increase the display of paid content. This move will put YouTube in direct competition with paid content platforms such as Amazon Prime Video or Disney+.
According to a source from The Information, YouTube on TV is about to deploy an extensive interface renovation. Instead of keeping the familiar design on web and mobile versions, YouTube TV will take the style of popular streaming platforms.
YouTube said that the number of users watching content on TV is increasing rapidly. This means they also tend to access paid content more if it is displayed immediately.
Instead of leaving the fee-paying content in hidden columns, the new design will take them to the center. In addition, YouTube will integrate creator-produced videos as filmed into the content flows of paid channels, creating a seamless content flow. Content creators will also have the option to create seasons and filmed collections to suit this new trend.
This change comes shortly after YouTube launched the Premium Lite package, allowing users to watch most videos without ads for $7.99/month, which is only half the full YouTube Premium package.
This package could impact the new app design strategy, as users who choose Premium Lite may be willing to spend more money on additional content.
YouTube confirmed that a new interface update for the TV app will be rolled out in the coming months.
