How to eat pears for people with diabetes

Kiều Vũ |

Pears are one of the fruits suitable for people with diabetes if used properly.

Many people believe that diabetics should completely avoid sweet fruits, but the important thing is not to abstain absolutely but to choose fruits with low glycemic index and control the diet reasonably.

Pears are considered a fruit with a low glycemic index, fluctuating around 24–33, helping blood sugar to increase more slowly after eating. At the same time, pears also contain a lot of fiber, vitamin C and antioxidant compounds that are beneficial for health.

For people with diabetes, the best way is to eat fresh pears whole instead of drinking juice. When juiced, most of the fiber is removed, causing natural sugar to be absorbed faster and may increase blood sugar. The fiber in pears helps slow down the process of carbohydrate digestion, thereby supporting more effective blood sugar control. Therefore, you should eat the whole peel after washing to maximize the amount of fiber and nutrients in the fruit.

Diet is also an important factor. People with diabetes should eat about one small pear or half a large pear at a time. Pears can be used as a snack in the morning or afternoon to limit feelings of hunger and avoid eating too much during main meals.

Combining pears with protein or healthy fat-rich foods such as unsweetened yogurt, walnuts, or almonds will help stabilize blood sugar better and create a feeling of fullness for longer.

People with diabetes should also limit processed pear products such as canned pears in syrup, dried pears, or juices with added sugar. These products often contain significantly higher sugar content than fresh pears and can increase the risk of blood sugar fluctuations.

Pears are a healthy fruit choice for people with diabetes thanks to their low glycemic index, rich in fiber and many beneficial nutrients. When eaten in moderation, prioritizing fresh pears whole and combined with a balanced diet, people with diabetes can completely enjoy the delicious taste of this fruit while still maintaining a stable blood sugar level.
