Benefit
Dr. SM Fayaz - Internal Medicine Physician, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru (India) - said that eating dark chocolate every day is only good for your health when you eat it in moderation.
Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, especially flavonoids, which may help improve heart health, reduce inflammation and boost brain function.
However, it's important to choose dark chocolate with a high cocoa content (about 70% or more) and little added sugar to maximize its health benefits.
According to Dr SM Fayaz, dark chocolate has many health benefits, including improving heart health because it contains antioxidant properties, enhancing brain function because of increased blood flow to the brain, and its ability to improve mood through the release of endorphins.
Dark chocolate also helps lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease. Additionally, it can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of diabetes.
Health risks of consuming dark chocolate every day
Dr Fayaz said that daily consumption of dark chocolate can pose health risks if not consumed in moderation. Excessive consumption can lead to weight gain due to its calorie and fat content. It can also cause gastrointestinal problems such as bloating and constipation in some individuals.
Dark chocolate contains caffeine, which can cause sleep disturbances and restlessness if consumed in large quantities, Mr. Fayaz added.
Ideal intake and frequency
The ideal amount of dark chocolate to consume is about 1-2 ounces (30-60 grams) per day, Dr. Fayaz advises.
This level of consumption allows you to enjoy the health benefits without overeating. It is best consumed as part of a balanced diet, along with other nutritious foods and ensuring you keep your overall calorie intake within healthy limits.
