People with diabetes who want to sleep well should prioritize some foods

People with diabetes are often prone to difficulty sleeping, waking up in the middle of the night or not sleeping deeply, especially when blood sugar fluctuates erratically.

Evening diet can therefore significantly affect sleep quality.

Choosing the right food not only helps control blood sugar but also supports the body to relax and maintain a stable sleep.

First of all, people with diabetes should prioritize a moderate dinner, rich in fiber and protein, instead of eating too much refined starch.

Green vegetables, beans, fish, poultry with skin, eggs or tofu are suitable choices. Fiber helps slow down carbohydrate absorption, while protein contributes to a feeling of fullness for a long time, limiting nighttime hunger.

If you need a light snack before bed, you can consider a small amount of unsweetened yogurt, a few nuts like almonds or walnuts, or a small amount of protein-rich foods. However, the diet needs to be adjusted according to the total amount of carbohydrates in the day and each person's blood sugar control plan.

Conversely, people with diabetes should limit confectionery, milk tea, soft drinks, sugary juices and foods high in starch in the evening. These foods can cause blood sugar to rise rapidly, and make meals too energy-rich. Coffee, strong tea and caffeine-containing drinks should also be avoided in the evening if these types make it difficult for patients to sleep.

An important point is that sleep quality also depends on eating hours, food intake, exercise, stress and overall blood sugar control. People who are using insulin or drugs at risk of hypoglycemia need to be especially careful with skipping meals or eating more on their own before going to bed.

To sleep better, diabetics should build a balanced dinner, prioritizing green vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats and fiber-rich carbohydrates with appropriate portions. In addition, it is necessary to limit sweets and caffeine in the evening.

If you wake up frequently from hunger, sweating, tremors, or suspected nighttime hypoglycemia, you should talk to your doctor to assess and adjust your treatment regimen, instead of increasing your food intake before bed.
