Artist Nguyen Hai has a happy married life. His wife was a classmate in the first acting class of the Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema. Later, his wife switched to teaching music and retired.
Despite their popularity, the male artist and his wife chose to live in a 41m2 house in a small alley on Kim Nguu Street, Hanoi, so that the whole "three great streets" could cozy up.
The male artist and his wife have a son and a daughter. The eldest son received a scholarship to study abroad in England, then returned to Vietnam to work, while the youngest daughter got married.
After retiring in 2019, People's Artist Nguyen Hai is still busy with art. He returned to acting in films such as "Quynh Doll", "Bao Bat" along with short films for VTC, VTV2 and young directors.
At the same time, he also pursued the profession of lawyer, free legal consulting for people, opening film education and teaching centers and actively participating in charity activities across provinces and cities.
People's Artist Nguyen Hai was born in 1958, one of the veteran faces of the Vietnamese screen, famous for his nickname "antity boss" thanks to his ability to perfectly transform into thorny-throated actors.
However, in real life, the male artist is a warm, sincere and family-loving person.
Before turning into art, he graduated from the University of Mining and Geology and worked as a mining engineer after graduation.
However, his passion for the stage motivated him to study at Hanoi University of Theatre and Cinema.
In addition to his role as an actor, he was also a police colonel, former Deputy Head of the Drama Group of the People's Public Security before retiring.
He holds the position of Deputy Director of the Institute for Applied Arts Development Research under the Vietnam Craft Village Association.
With his natural acting style, People's Artist Nguyen Hai left his mark through many outstanding villainous roles such as Trinh Kha in "Chuyen Lang Nho", General Director Le Thanh in "Chieu An", or Dai Can - a prostitution boss in "Quynh Doll", the role of a police officer in "Border Storm".
Explaining why he often plays a colonel in a villainous role, artist Nguyen Hai said that the role-playing was done by the director, according to script requirements.
Not everyone can play the role of a superstitious villain like People's Artist Nguyen Hai. He jokingly said that after the movie "Nho Village Story", his father told him to "not return to the countryside anymore" because his acting was so exaggerated that his neighbors were stirred up.
For each role, whether main or supporting, the artist focuses on it. When playing the role of Can in Quynh Doll, he had to go to a karaoke bar about 10 times to learn the negative aspects, to give the role the closest to reality.
Although he often plays a villain in films, on stage, artist Nguyen Hai is often given the main role.
He was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist in 2012 and the title of People's Artist in 2019.
