Jujubes have a sweet taste, crispy flesh and are often used as a fruit to eat directly. When buying, consumers should not only look at the size or appearance but also check the firmness, skin and condition of the fruit stem.
Choose fruits with bright skin, not bruised
Fresh jujubes usually have a bright, green or green-yellow peel, when ripe they will gradually turn pink-red, reddish-brown or alternate between green and reddish-brown depending on the ripeness. You should choose fruits with relatively uniform colors, tense surfaces and no dark patches, mold or watery areas.
Fruits with many deep scratches, cracks or strong bruises should be limited in selection. Damaged areas on the skin can cause the fruit to quickly decline in quality during storage.
Hold the fruit to check the firmness
Hardness is one of the signs that can be used to check red apples. When held, fresh fruits are usually firm, press lightly and do not soften or sink deeply.
If the fruit is too soft, the skin is wrinkled, or feels foamy when pressed, buyers should consider it because the fruit may have been left for a long time. However, do not squeeze it hard to check because this can bruise the fruit.
Observe the fruit stem
The stem is also a location to check when buying. You should choose fruits with intact stems, dry and without mold or abnormal fluids.
If you buy apples in bags or boxes, you should carefully observe the fruits at the bottom. A few crushed fruits can make the surrounding fruits spoil faster.
Do not choose fruits with abnormal smells
Fresh jujubes do not have a sour smell, fermentation smell or strange smell. If you detect an unusual smell accompanied by a soft, dark or watery skin, you should ignore that fruit.
When purchasing packaged products, consumers should check information about the origin, supplier and packaging time or expiration date if any. After purchasing, preserve according to the instructions on the packaging or of the seller to maintain crispness and limit fruit damage.
Fruits that have been heavily bruised, moldy or show signs of damage should be removed and should not be continued to be used.
