The image of a 25-year-old pregnant woman running a marathon has been widely shared on social media in recent days. According to the report, despite being 29 weeks pregnant, this pregnant woman still participated and completed the 5km distance in nearly 41 minutes.
The above action has caused much controversy. Many people worry that vigorous exercise will pose many dangers, affecting the safety of the mother and fetus.
Meanwhile, some other opinions say that jogging under permitted conditions will help pregnant women have better health and give birth more easily later.
So should you jog or exercise vigorously while pregnant?
Ms. Bui Thi Yen Xuan - PT with more than 10 years of experience - discussed with Lao Dong: "There are some opinions that, for long-time athletes or professional runners, strenuous activities are normal. That is partly true. But its risks outweigh the benefits, so it needs to be considered and not taken risks.
From a medical perspective, pregnant women are at high risk during pregnancy, especially during strenuous exercise. The mother may be very healthy, but the baby developing inside cannot be guaranteed to be 100% stable and safe. Therefore, avoiding risks is a must.”
PT Bui Thi Yen Xuan also added that not everyone is aware of the problem, so each person needs to equip themselves with knowledge before and during pregnancy to limit the dangers they may face.
Currently, goalkeeper Dang Van Lam's wife is also pregnant. Although she has more than 10 years of experience, Yen Xuan is very careful in her daily activities and training during her first pregnancy. The female PT said that from the moment she found out she was pregnant, she stopped exercising, did not run or jump, and did not do any strenuous activities.
“After 12 weeks, I will start doing light exercise with activities such as walking for 20 minutes (increasing the time according to strength and number of sessions); cycling for 20 minutes; paying attention to checking my physical fitness, always keeping my heart rate at an average level, not pushing my heart rate too high…”, Yen Xuan shared.
Goalkeeper Van Lam's wife also gave advice to pregnant mothers: "For pregnant women, exercise must be based on daily exercise history and existing health. Pregnant women can refer to some healthy, safe exercises that are chosen by many people such as Yoga, walking, Pilates...
But it should be noted that exercise is always encouraged under planned conditions, with an instructor and under the supervision of a physician.
Exercising to maintain health and bring good benefits during pregnancy is a positive thing. But you need to choose the right sport and practice according to the recommendations of doctors and experts. Exercising is not a trend, it is a healthy habit, the same goes for pregnancy."
Doctor Duong Tien Can - Vietnam Sports Hospital - said: "In addition to health issues, pregnant women when exercising must always pay attention to other possible risks.
Running 5km is always risky for pregnant women. Medically, I think this method should not be widely applied. Pregnant women in the 7th month should usually only maintain walking about 30 minutes a day to relax.
Jogging can affect biological rhythms and hormonal changes. Pregnant women's bodies are always changing. My point of view is that it cannot be widely used, there needs to be recommendations and even warnings."
