Recently, an assault on a woman right in the elevator hall of an apartment building (Phuong Liet, Hanoi) occurred, causing public outrage.
Images from the clip show that, when the incident occurred, in addition to the victims and assaultors, there were also children - unwilling witnesses.
The incident not only shocked viewers but also raised concerns: What psychological consequences can there be when children witness open violence?
Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper reporter, psychologist Mai Viet Duc - Center for Counseling and Psychotherapy of Nhan Hoa Viet - said that public violence is like a "psnake" not only on victims but also on the safety of all witnesses, especially children.
At this age, children learn to understand the world through the behavior of adults. When witnessing the violence with one's own eyes, especially in places that should have been safe like the lobby of an apartment building. Invisibly, young people can form the mindset that violence is a way to solve problems, said the expert.
The expert also emphasized that this is the spearhead of negativity. If not relocated, these actions will greatly affect the personality, actions and living values of children in the future.
Also sharing about this issue, Dr. Tran Thi Hong Nhung - Deputy Director of Mai Huong Day Mental Hospital - said that when children are scared, cower or impersonate violent behavior, parents should not stay silent but need to react quickly during the "golden time" period.
The golden time is 24 to 72 hours immediately after the incident. Clearly state that children are safe, define and affirm that violence is wrong. Then gently instruct children on how to resolve conflicts by words instead of violence to help them restore faith and peace of mind, Dr. Tran Thi Hong Nhung recommended.
In addition, Dr. Tran Thi Hong Nhung also reminded parents to monitor their children for 2 weeks. If children show signs of insomnia, obsession or aggression, take them to a psychologist.
Thus, it can be seen that public violence and assaults, even arising from small causes, can still leave long-term consequences for children's spirit.
Every parent needs to realize that civilized behavior in the community is the best way to protect the spirit and mental health of children.
