On November 27, Korean media reported that after the fire that occurred in Hong Kong (China), the organizing committee of the 2025 MAMA Awards held an urgent meeting at the venue and finally decided not to cancel the event but still proceeded as planned for November 28-29.
However, the event will be held in a solemn and much calmer atmosphere than originally planned. Many artists have traveled to Hong Kong (China), making it difficult for the organizers to have any other plan.
The MAMA organizing committee informed the artists and audiences: In addition to plans related to the operation and organization of the awards ceremony, we are also carefully considering factors related to the artists performance stage and the awards script. We will update as soon as everything is finalized.
Once again, we would like to sincerely apologize to all artists and those involved for causing the concern. The organizing committee will continue to closely monitor the situation and find the best solution."
Previously, on the afternoon of November 26, a large-scale fire broke out in a high-rise apartment complex consisting of 8 buildings in Tai Po district, north of Hong Kong (China).
The Hong Kong government has raised the fire warning to level 5 - the highest level - marking the first time this has happened since the Mong Kok nightclub fire in 2008.
As of early afternoon on November 27, at least 55 people have been confirmed dead, 72 injured and more than 200 missing.
The apartment building where the fire occurred is located about 21km from Kai Tak Stadium - the venue for the 2025 MAMA awards ceremony - equivalent to 20 minutes drive.
