In a recent interview with Korea Times, actor Gong Yoo shared many aspects about Netflix's new drama "The Trunk," his views on love and aging.
"The Trunk" revolves around a special matchmaking service where lonely people are connected through a 1-year marriage contract.
In the film, Gong Yoo plays Han Jeong Won, a lonely music producer who, after past trauma, is forced into a contract marriage with Noh In Ji (Seo Hyun Jin) - a mysterious woman with a complicated past.
Gong Yoo shared that he was drawn to the script because of the way it explored the nuances of love: "I believe that even in romantic relationships there are darker aspects.
Many dramas and movies portray love in a bright, glamorous way, but I wanted to delve into its darker corners. I was curious about why Jeong Won had to endure so much pain.”
While filming "The Trunk", Gong Yoo deeply reflected on the nature of love, describing it as "existential love" or "possessive love".
He shared: “Possessive love can destroy relationships. In the name of love, it can harm both yourself and those around you.
When you truly love someone, you constantly struggle with petty emotions. Calming down and finding strength simply in the presence of the other person - that's what I think existential love is.”

Gong Yoo also praised actress Seo Hyun Jin. He affirmed: "I can't imagine anyone else playing No In Ji. Even after the drama ended, I still thought: If not Seo Hyun Jin, who else could take on this role?".
The actor emphasized that "The Trunk" is not a story with two main characters, but focuses more on No In Ji's journey.
But according to Gong Yoo, he doesn't care whether he plays a main or supporting role, but mainly cares about whether the story is really interesting or not. If the script doesn't arouse his curiosity enough, then being the main character doesn't mean anything.
Also in the interview, Gong Yoo shared honestly about age and aging.
At 45, Gong Yoo said: “I like the wrinkles on my face. They can become part of my background as an actor. I don't hate aging.”
However, Gong Yoo admitted that there were times when he was surprised by the changes in himself, such as how his eyes gradually became double eyelids as he got older.
“At first, I wasn't used to it - it was a sudden change due to aging. I like monolids, so at first I felt quite shy but it wasn't because I didn't like aging,” the actor further explained.
