Grammy reviews Asian Pop Awards after BTS's decision

The US Academy of Recording Reviews the Asian Pop Music Awards after BTS announced they would not submit Grammy 2027 entries.

The US Academy of Recording is reviewing the "Best Asian Pop Performance" category, just two months after the announcement and a few weeks after BTS announced they would not submit products to compete for the 2027 Grammy Awards.

Harvey Mason Jr., Executive Director of the Academy, said the organization has received many opinions from artists and representatives of the music industry in recent weeks. Some people believe that the new category does not accurately reflect the music they create as well as how they want to be recognized.

The Academy exists to serve all those who work in music. Part of that is to ensure that no voice or community is ignored or misunderstood," said Harvey Mason Jr.

According to him, although the initial goal of the category was to expand the representation of Asian music, recent feedback suggests that the award structure needs to be further considered. "As a musician, I acknowledge that," he said.

The leadership, Board of Directors and Award and Nomination Committee of the Academy will continue to work with artists and representatives of K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, Indian music communities and many other markets. The exchanges are aimed at evaluating both the new categories and the process of bringing new awards into the Grammy system.

Best Asian Pop Performance" was announced in June and is expected to be awarded for the first time at the 2027 Grammys. This category is included in the system in the context of K-pop and many Asian music genres increasingly expanding their influence in the international market.

However, just a few weeks later, BTS announced that they would not submit products competing for the 2027 Grammy Awards. The group said they want music to be listened to and loved based on the value of the work, instead of being divided by region or language.

BTS's decision especially attracted attention because the group held a prominent position in the K-pop expansion process in the US market. BTS was the first Korean group to receive a Grammy nomination, then continued to be nominated many more times. The group also appeared and performed at the awards ceremony, becoming one of the K-pop representatives with the clearest presence on the major music stage of the US.

In that context, BTS's initiative not to participate in the 2027 Grammys has made the debate about the Asian Pop Music Awards more noticed. The issue is not only in a new category but also related to how international awards perceive artists from non-Western markets.

Building separate awards can help music communities gain attention and create more opportunities for recognition. However, some artists are concerned that regional or language classification may separate them from common categories. As music genres like K-pop, J-pop or C-pop have reached global audiences, this boundary becomes even more difficult to define.

BTS's point of view also reflects the above issue. The group does not object to Asian music being recognized, but emphasizes the desire for works to be evaluated based on musical values rather than geographical or linguistic origin.

Previously, the Academy explained that adding the Asian Pop category does not mean that artists in this region are limited in opportunities. Works that meet the criteria can still be considered in general categories such as "Album of the Year", "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year".

Currently, the Academy has not yet proposed a specific plan for the "Best Asian Pop Performance". However, the proactive organization of consultations with artists and representatives of many communities shows that the possibility of adjusting the category before the 2027 Grammys is being considered.

With the influence of BTS and the rapid development of K-pop in the international market, the Academy's handling of this category may become a noteworthy issue in the upcoming Grammy season.
