According to the Korea Times, sensitive content, such as nudity and sex scenes, are common in TV dramas and movies, causing many challenges for actors.
Despite the difficulties, many actors still accept the challenge for the benefit of the project. But it is also necessary to consider when performing these scenes to avoid abusing the actor's image.
Actress Park Ji Hyun recently tried a bold image change in the movie "Hidden Face", which premiered on November 20.
During the press conference for the film, Park Ji Hyun shared about her experience filming a hot scene: "It's definitely a big challenge for an actor. When I look at a project or a script, the first thing I consider is whether I can fully immerse myself in this character. I don't take into account aspects like nudity.
“It would be a lie to say that I didn’t feel any burden. But the burden wasn’t about the nudity. What bothered me more was the uncertainty of whether I could properly portray Mi Joo in those scenes.”
The recently released Netflix drama "The Trunk" also has hot scenes involving two actors Seo Hyun Jin and Gong Yoo.
Seo Hyun Jin shared at the press conference, "If a scene is necessary to explain the character, then I'm fine. I believe that the director won't ask for anything excessive or unnecessary. I believe that he will adjust everything appropriately. So it's not a big deal for me."
Director Kim Kyu Tae also explained the necessity of these scenes, saying: "Sex scenes are essential to express the characters' emotions and the situations they are facing.
The aim was to build the plausibility of the story, not to add shock elements. We approached the filming process with moderation and careful consideration.”
In "The Trunk," the characters' emotions are revealed through subtle moments, including a scene where Seo Hyun Jin and Gong Yoo kiss while lying on a bed. Other actors in the film also participate in some sensitive scenes, including some semi-nude moments.
The burden of nudity and explicit scenes is a frequent topic in interviews and press events. Many actors say such scenes are acceptable when they are necessary to the story and not just included for shock value.
However, it cannot be denied that actors have to make careful decisions before taking on such roles.
Actress Ahn So Young once shared that she was deeply hurt by the way the audience perceived her after sensitive scenes in the movie "Madame Aema".
“The popularity of the film ended up doing me more harm than good,” she said.
Cultural critic Jung Duk Hyun said: "For a nudity scene to be meaningful, the work itself must take precedence. The nudity scene must fit the message of the project and the character's story."
He also noted that actors participating in sensitive scenes need to be respected and given proper health care. “The industry must prioritize the dignity of the actors over any other scenes,” the critic asserted.
