On July 15, Television Academy announced the nomination list for the 77th Emmy Awards, and Squid Game was absent in important categories such as Best Drama Series.
According to Forbes, Squid Game was expected to receive nominations in many categories, including Drama Series, acting awards, production design, visual effects and excellent acting performance, but was eventually completely removed from the list. However, the magazine added: Season 2 still maintains an 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In 2022, Squid Game's first season set a record with 14 nominations at the Emmy Awards, including categories such as "Best Drama Series", "Director", "Scraper", "main Actor" and "Best Supporting Actor/Actress". This is the largest number of nominations ever for a non-English-language drama series at the Emmy Awards.
At that year's awards ceremony, Squid Game won 6 awards, including: "Best Director" (Hwang Dong Hyuk), "Best Actor" (Lee Jung Jae), "Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series" (Lee Yoo Mi), and awards for Outstanding Production Effects, Outstanding Acting Performance, and Production Design.
Some analysts believe that the reason season 2 did not win a nomination this year is due to the lack of a complete ending plot. Season 2 and season 3 of Squid Game are actually a continuous story, but are released in two separate seasons, which can make viewers feel uncomprehensive.
However, season 3 released in June 2025 is still eligible to compete for the Emmy awards next year. This year's award ceremony only applies to broadcast programs from June 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025. Season 2 of Squid Game will be released in December 2024.
Season 2 of Squid Game continues to follow the male lead Gi-hun after he decided not to leave Korea but returned to expose the organization behind the deadly game. The plot expands with many new characters, revealing more deeply about the way the game works and the manipulationists behind the scenes.
