He was born in 1968 in Ho Chi Minh City. Ngan Tuan is the only member of a family of 15 siblings who is in the singing profession.
As a child, Ngan Tuan was the "scoring king" of the talented football team Tao Dan. Due to an injury that prevented him from continuing his form as before, he switched to studying classical music and enrolled in the University of Stage Arts 2.
In 1985, he joined Song Be 2 troupe, stage name Ngan Tuan (real name Doan Van Day), and started his stage career in small roles. In 1990, he joined the Huynh Long troupe.

In his personal life, Ngan Tuan went through many unfinished love affairs before getting married to his current wife.
