Teachers are afraid of everything
In recent days, information about a 7th grade student at Dai Kim Secondary School (Hanoi) who had behaved inappropriately towards his homeroom teacher (swearing his hair, grabbing the teacher, tying up toys) when the teacher confiscated sharp, safe toys, has received public attention. In fact, this is not the only case where students have deviant behavior towards teachers.
Ms. Le Dung (character's name has been changed), a junior high school teacher in Thanh Hoa - who has worked in the education sector for many years, often felt helpless in teaching and disciplining adversary students.
"In a class, there are at least a few individual students. Only a few students who make a fuss can make the whole class noisy and not gather to listen to the lessons. There are students who deliberately tease teachers when they are scolded, or even use inappropriate words to argue with teachers.
In such cases, psychological analysis and prevention measures are almost ineffective. Once I invited their parents to come but they were not afraid. The most severe form of discipline is suspending school, which is not easy, because many procedures and sometimes the principal is afraid of affecting the overall performance of the whole school or sometimes, parents do not believe their children are bad, react nguoc lai to teachers, schools, etc.
But that was before, and now, the Ministry of Education and Training has eliminated the form of suspension of study, the highest discipline is just writing a review. With such a form of discipline, we teachers find it difficult to deter particular students" - Ms. Dung shared.
Need for coordination between schools and families
Dr. Vu Thu Huong - former lecturer of the Faculty of Primary Education, Hanoi National University of Education, education expert - said that the incident at Dai Kim Secondary School is an expensive lesson, ringing the bell to warn about the moral degradation of a part of students.
"Our previous generation, teachers and students never insulted teachers in any way. There have been many incidents of students insulting teachers. This is a pivotal incident when teachers were seriously abused by their own students.
This raises concerns, social ethics and school ethics, need to change and improve this instead of just the incident at Dai Kim Secondary School" - Ms. Huong said.
Regarding solutions, experts say that it is necessary to have the coordination of schools, families and society. First and most importantly, the family factor. Parents need guidance in caring for and educating their children at home. Students must learn what is allowed, what is allowed, what is forbidden.
"The violators need to be subject to some form of discipline. Both grandparents and family members must also apply it so that their children can form a mindset about a rule of law society instead of a society that only cares about their own interests" - Ms. Huong said.
As for the school, according to Ms. Huong, it is necessary to resolve the rights of teachers, the work and responsibilities of teachers. In addition, it is necessary to consider the quality of skills, educational activities, ethics, and skills for students.
On the side of the Ministry of Education and Training, Ms. Huong suggested: "It is necessary to re-regulate which forms of punishment can be applied in schools and what will be the appropriate form of discipline for students who violate ethics to be enough to deter and educate them, this needs the Ministry of Education and Training to specifically study" - Ms. Huong said.
