Arranging school buses after 140 children not going to school in Nghe An

Nghe An - After the case of about 140 students not going to school due to parents' protests against removing remote school sites, the locality will arrange daily shuttle buses.

On September 12, in an exchange with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Dr. Nguyen Van Khoa - Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training (GDĐT) said that on the afternoon of September 11, the Education sector and local authorities had a dialogue with parents in Tien Son village, Quynh Tam commune about transferring students from remote school sites to the main school site and branch of Quynh Tam Primary School.

According to Mr. Khoa, one of the issues parents are most worried about is the longer distance to school after Tien Son school stops operating.

To remove this difficulty, the locality will arrange cars to pick up and drop off children daily, expected 3 trips per day. Funds are mobilized from socialized sources, not allowing parents to bear additional costs.

According to the People's Committee of Quynh Tam commune, from the beginning of next week, the school will also organize semi-boarding, serving 2 sessions/day of teaching, and at the same time reduce the number of times parents have to pick up and drop off their children.

According to the Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training, the transfer of students from remote school sites not only stems from the requirement to arrange the school and class network but also directly relates to safety and quality of education.

Tien Son school point was built in 1998, currently the facilities have deteriorated. Among the 5 classrooms, 3 are seriously degraded; some items pose potential safety risks, especially in storm and flood conditions.

In addition, the conditions for organizing teaching at remote locations are still limited, especially subject classrooms, Informatics, foreign languages, playgrounds, training grounds and experiential activities.

Meanwhile, the main school site and branch of Quynh Tam Primary School have been invested in more synchronous facilities, better meeting the requirements of 2-session/day teaching and comprehensive education.

According to leaders of Nghe An Department of Education and Training, bringing students to study at facilities with full classrooms, equipment and teaching staff is to create better learning conditions, while ensuring long-term safety.

As Lao Dong Newspaper has reported, at the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year, many parents in Tien Son village did not agree with the plan to stop operating remote school sites and transfer their children to the main school site and branch of Quynh Tam Primary School.

On September 9, only about 20 out of a total of about 160 students of Tien Son school point were brought to the new school point by parents. About 140 remaining students have not yet attended school.

According to parents' feedback, after transferring school sites, the travel distance for children has increased. From residential areas to new school sites is commonly about 6-7 km, some families are nearly 10 km away.

Many households are in difficult circumstances, parents go to work far away or children are cared for by elderly grandparents, so daily pick-up and drop-off encounter obstacles. Parents are also concerned about safety when children have to travel long distances, especially on rainy and storm days.

According to the Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training, in addition to arranging shuttle buses and organizing semi-boarding, the locality is investing in a road from Tien Son village connecting to village 10, Quynh Tam commune, with a total investment of nearly 20 billion VND. When completed, the road is expected to shorten the distance from Tien Son to the new school point by about 2 km.

The Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training said that the Education sector will continue to coordinate with the locality to remove difficulties arising in the process of transferring school sites, while ensuring teaching conditions, safety and the rights of students.
