Many "protective classes" of students are gradually weakening
In just the past 3 weeks, school violence has occurred consecutively, killing 3 students. These incidents ring the alarm about violence among school-age children.
School violence is now a very broad concept, not only stopping at acts such as physical violence, bullying or mental violence, but also including violence in cyberspace with increasingly complex and serious levels.
Explaining the reason why school violence is increasing and becoming more complicated, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thanh Nam - Vice Principal of the University of Education (Hanoi National University) - said that many "protection classes" for students in schools, families and society are being weakened.
In the context of continuous educational innovation, teachers are under great pressure when they have to update programs, textbooks, apply information technology... Therefore, many teachers tend to focus on completing professional tasks, without spending enough time to educate students on ethics and life skills.
From the perspective of a family, economic difficulties make parents busy with work, have less time to share, and be close to their children, especially those in their teenage years who need to be oriented. Many parents still have violent behavior towards their children, causing them to learn and consider it a normal way of behavior.
In addition, the lack of safety skills on the network for children who are exposed to electronic devices early contributes to increased violence.
Preventing violence through understanding and accompanying
The consecutive school violence cases that have occurred recently, taking the lives of too young students, have made Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh - a teacher at Nghe An Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities - shocked and saddened.
Many students are currently under great pressure from studying, social networks and even conflicts in their personal lives without a place to share. When not properly oriented, children can easily choose to react violently as a way to express negative emotions, said Ms. Binh.
The female teacher believes that to prevent school violence, parents need to spend more time listening to their children, accompanying them in their studies and life. The school and teachers focus more on life skills education, emotional control skills and building a school psychological counseling program for students.
Sharing about this issue, Mr. Mai Viet Duc - a psychologist at Nhan Hoa Viet Psychological Consulting Center (Hanoi) - emphasized that synchronous coordination is needed from family, school and society.
According to psychologists, families are the first "shield" to protect children. Every day, parents should spend at least 10 minutes talking, listening and sharing with their children. This connection helps parents detect changes in their children's psychology and behavior early, thereby promptly supporting them when they have problems.
On the school's side, Mr. Duc said that it is necessary to build school psychological counseling rooms, emotional sharing corners or anonymous letter boxes so that students have a place to express their feelings and seek help when they are stressed or in conflict. A healthy, understanding school environment will help limit negative behaviors and increase empathy among students.
"Tightening the mechanism for censoring online content is extremely necessary. Zinc trends, violent videos or inciting words are significantly affecting the awareness and behavior of young people. It is necessary to strictly handle cases of supporting or spreading violence in cyberspace" - Mr. Duc emphasized.
