Speaking to Lao Dong Newspaper on the morning of October 22, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan - Head of the Postgraduate Training Department (Hanoi Law University) said that, in response to the request of the Ministry of Education and Training, Hanoi Law University is carrying out legal procedures to cancel the results and revoke the degrees granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet (Venerable Thich Chan Quang) in accordance with the provisions of law.
"After the incident, Hanoi Law University held a meeting to review and evaluate the implementation of training regulations to continue improving the process, enhancing training quality and avoiding similar cases" - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan affirmed.
According to Hanoi Law University, before applying for a PhD, Mr. Vuong Tan Viet graduated with a bachelor's degree in English in 2001 from the University of Foreign Languages (now Hanoi University); and graduated with a bachelor's degree in law in 2019 from Hanoi Law University (second degree, part-time program).
After that, Mr. Vuong Tan Viet became a PhD student and completed his training program at Hanoi Law University. On December 9, 2021, the PhD student successfully defended his thesis at the university level; on March 17, 2022, the PhD student was awarded a doctorate degree.
Previously, in a press release providing information related to the training process and granting of a doctoral degree to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet, Hanoi Law University affirmed that the total time of doctoral training of student Vuong Tan Viet (ie Venerable Thich Chan Quang) until the decision to recognize the degree and grant the doctoral degree was 2 years and 3 months, meeting and complying with the doctoral training regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training and the school's decision.
However, the school also affirmed that after the conclusion, if Mr. Vuong Tan Viet's high school diploma is fake, the school will follow the conclusion and direction of the competent authority to handle Mr. Viet's bachelor's and doctoral degrees granted by the school.
Under current regulations, any advanced degree of an individual will be revoked or annulled if their high school diploma is invalid, even if the advanced study process has been carried out properly.
Hanoi University is also carrying out procedures to revoke the bachelor's degree in English from the Distance Learning program granted to Mr. Vuong Tan Viet.
In addition to the above degrees, Mr. Vuong Tan Viet is currently a research student, pursuing a doctoral program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi).
