After a long wait, the Department of Education and Training (DET) of Can Tho City has announced that English will be the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025.
Previously, many students expressed concern that the sudden change in exam subjects would cause difficulties in the review process. However, with the positive response from the English selection, many students breathed a sigh of relief and felt more secure.
Sharing with Lao Dong, Nguyen Ho Hoai Nhu - a 9th grade student at Luong The Vinh Secondary School, Ninh Kieu District - said that while waiting for the results of the third exam subject for grade 10, she and her friends were quite worried and nervous, especially when they heard many people speculate that they would not choose English and instead choose another subject.
“We are quite worried if English is not chosen, because for the remaining subjects, we have not prepared for many years, so we are afraid that when we take the test, we will not get a high score, which means we are not capable of passing the entrance exam to our dream school,” said Hoai Nhu.
This female student said that when she received the news that English was the third subject, she and her friends were very happy, excited and felt less pressured, because this is a subject that is invested in a lot and is familiar in exams.
“In previous years, our seniors took the English exam in the 10th grade entrance exams, so we prepared early and carefully for this subject, hoping to do the best we could on the exam,” Hoai Nhu added.
Many other students shared that they are currently spending time looking for more documents and books as well as learning from the experiences of their seniors in previous courses to focus on reviewing and solving English exams.
According to students, English is widely used in all fields, choosing this subject helps create conditions for students to study more and develop their foreign language skills, and is also an opportunity for them to easily find suitable jobs in the future.
Previously, the 10th grade entrance exam was planned by the locality, including the number of subjects. However, 2025 is the first year that students graduating from the 2018 General Education Program graduate, and the Ministry of Education and Training has issued new, unified regulations on junior high school and high school admission nationwide.
Accordingly, for the entrance exam to grade 10, localities can choose to conduct an entrance exam, a selection exam, or a combination of entrance exam and selection exam. If choosing to conduct an entrance exam, the exam will include Math, Literature, and a third subject (or a combined exam); this subject is selected by the Department of Education and Training from the subjects assessed by scores, but no subject can be selected for more than 3 consecutive years.
The third exam must be announced after the end of semester I and no later than March 31, 2025.
Currently, some provinces and cities have announced the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam in 2025. In Can Tho, English has been chosen, which is also the subject that localities are prioritizing.
Announcing the exam subjects early helps create conditions for teachers to be proactive in their teaching and review plans; helping students have more time and a comfortable mindset to effectively review for the upcoming important exam.
