Class 12A7 specializing in Literature, Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted (Phu Tho province) has 35 students, of which 19 students choose majors belonging to the Pedagogy and Education groups. Hanoi National University of Education alone has 16 students, accounting for nearly half of the class size.
Students mainly choose Literature Pedagogy, English Pedagogy and Primary Education.
In addition to 16 students entering Hanoi National University of Education, one student studied Literature Pedagogy at Hanoi National University of Education 2, one student followed this major at the University of Education and one student chose English Pedagogy at the University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Ms. Tran Thi Mai Hanh - homeroom teacher - said that the results made her happy and somewhat surprised, but also within expectations. Many students have aptitude for specialized subjects and have early goals. Right from grade 10, homeroom teachers and specialized teachers have oriented them to choose directions and strive in three years of high school.
Behind the percentage of students choosing Pedagogy is the outstanding achievement of the Literature specialized class.
According to Ms. Bui Thi Hoang Yen - Head of the Literature Department, teacher in charge of the main specialized subject of the class, the students selected to participate in the national excellent student exam, including the advanced exam and grade 12, all won prizes.
In total, the class has 6 national prizes, including three second prizes, two third prizes and one consolation prize. Among the 5 students who have won national prizes (some have competed twice), 3 choose to study pedagogy.
And in the provincial-level excellent student exam, over 90% of participating students won prizes. According to Ms. Yen, each session has about 25 students participating, a total of about 60-70 times winning prizes in three years. The class also won Gold and Silver medals at the summer camp and Coastal Delta exams.
The high school graduation exam results of the class are also at a high level, with an average score of about 8.7 points in Literature. Among them, Vu Ngoc Nhat Phuong achieved 9.5 points, belonging to the high score group of the whole country.
Although Pedagogy is a prominent choice, the direction of 12A7 students is not limited to the teaching profession.
After three years of specializing in Literature, 35 members of the class went to 14 universities and academies, pursuing many professions such as International Communications, Foreign Economics, Digital Economy, Logistics, Economic Data Analysis and Language.
Notably, a student was admitted to Tsinghua University (China) and received a scholarship from this school. According to Ms. Mai Hanh, the female student is good at both Math and foreign languages, achieving HSK 6 and IELTS 6.5.
Another student won a 70% scholarship from VinUni University.
The diversity in choice is also shown in Vu Ngoc Nhat Phuong. Although she won the second prize in the national excellent student exam in Literature, the female student chose English Pedagogy at the University of Foreign Languages, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. According to Ms. Mai Hanh, the student wants to try her hand in a new field.
Explaining why many students turn to the teaching profession, Ms. Hoang Yen said that first of all, it is the love for the specialized subject that is nurtured during the learning process. Besides, it is the teachers at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, with their expertise and dedication, who become a source of inspiration for students to want to continue their pedagogical path.
The achievements in the excellent student exams also create favorable conditions for students when applying for this major" - Ms. Hoang Yen said.
Sharing about three years of accompanying the class, Ms. Hoang Yen said that to "ignite the fire", first of all, teachers must love and be passionate about literature and dedicated to each student. Specialized teachers also need to have in-depth knowledge, constantly update and innovate to meet students who inherently have qualities and good self-learning ability.
But for her, teaching Literature does not stop at imparting knowledge.
Not only teaching knowledge but also caring about the spiritual life and soul life of students. Because teaching Literature is also teaching how to be human" - Ms. Hoang Yen said.
The female teacher believes that the concept of studying Literature as just memorizing is no longer appropriate. The subject helps train logical thinking, communication skills, problem-looking and respect for differences. This is also the foundation for students to choose many paths after leaving specialized schools.
