According to the plan of Lang Son Provincial People's Committee, in the 2026-2027 school year, Chinese will be taught at 4 boarding primary and secondary schools in border communes, with 16 classes, 560 students.
The program is also being implemented in 12 high schools, including 59 classes with 2,575 students. Thus, about 3,135 students in 75 classes will learn Chinese in the first year.
The introduction of this language into schools aims to increase learning opportunities for students in border areas, serve people-to-people exchanges, international cooperation and human resource development. The program is also expected to meet labor needs in the fields of border trade, logistics, tourism and services.
From the 2027-2028 school year, the teaching scope is expected to be expanded to all 11 primary and secondary boarding schools in border communes, with 99 classes and 3,465 students.
At the same time, 10 primary schools and 10 secondary schools in favorable areas will organize Chinese language teaching. The expected scale includes 50 primary classes with 1,750 students and 40 secondary classes with 1,800 students. At the high school level, the program is implemented in 15 schools, with 87 classes and 3,795 students.
By the 2028-2029 school year, the number of participating students will continue to increase. Border boarding schools alone are expected to have 6,930 students; primary and secondary schools in favorable areas have about 7,100 students; high schools have 3,930 students. This scale will be maintained in the 2029-2030 school year.
According to the plan, 1st and 2nd grade students can participate in activities to get acquainted with Chinese. From 3rd grade, schools are organized to teach Chinese in the role of Foreign Language 1, based on the needs of students, parents and actual conditions.
Educational institutions can also teach Chinese as Foreign Language 2. Testing and assessment activities focus on four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, in which listening and communication skills are prioritized.
Lang Son will recruit more teachers, build a core professional team and organize training at home and abroad. The province also orients the use of artificial intelligence (AI), digital learning materials and online platforms to personalize the learning process.
Schools are encouraged to establish clubs, organize cultural exchanges, foreign language festivals and career guidance activities in Chinese. The implementation must ensure that it does not affect other subjects, and is suitable for the teaching staff, facilities and needs of learners.
