At the opening ceremony of Tien Du High School No. 1 (Bac Ninh province), a modern dance performance by students attracted attention after images were shared on social networks. Costumes and some movements in the performance became points that made viewers have different views.
For students, modern dance performances are no longer unfamiliar in school art programs. However, when placed in a special event such as the opening ceremony, the choice and performance of the performance receive different perspectives.
Young people look from different angles
Sharing with reporters, Chu Dinh Ha (Vietnam - Korea Vocational College) said that in recent years, modern dance performances have appeared quite commonly in school arts activities. This is also a way for students to show their dynamism, personality and talent.
Young people now have many different hobbies and ways of expressing themselves. I think if you have talent and love to dance, bringing such performances to school stages is also normal" - Ha said.
However, according to Ha, youthfulness needs to be suitable for each circumstance. From choosing songs, costumes to performance styles, performers should consider the nature of the program and the audience, especially for events such as the opening ceremony.
I still support you showing your personality, but when standing on the school's stage, you should pay more attention, both to the costumes and the way you express yourself. If you can balance dynamism and be suitable for the program, it will be better" - Ha shared.
Meanwhile, Bui Thi Hoai Linh - a student at a high school in Hanoi - also agreed, saying that modern dance is no longer unfamiliar to students, but when performing at the opening ceremony, consideration is needed.
I think you can dance modern, exciting songs, but with the opening ceremony, you should pay more attention to costumes and movements. This is a common program of the school, with many audiences watching together" - Linh said.
According to the female student, giving advice does not mean limiting students' personality. If oriented in advance, you can still maintain your own personality but avoid details that easily cause controversy.
Maybe students find it normal, but parents and teachers have a different view. Therefore, before performing, you should consider carefully so that the performance is suitable for many people" - Linh shared.
Balance between personality and suitability
Also a student who regularly participates in cultural activities at school, Ngo Bich Ngoc - an 11th grade student at a high school in Hanoi - believes that the debates surrounding a performance are also something that art troupes need to pay attention to right from the preparation stage.
To perform in front of the whole school, students not only practice movements but also need to consider from choosing songs, costumes to how to perform on stage.
Our group often has to rehearse many times when preparing a performance. There are parts when practicing together that feel okay, but when combined into a whole performance, they need to be adjusted. Clothes also have to see if they are suitable for the song and the program. Therefore, I think reviewing and giving feedback before performing is very necessary" - Ngoc said.
The female student believes that students participating in arts performances often want their performances to have their own mark, but the difference needs to be placed in the overall program, especially with special school events.
I also like modern performances, because if they are always the same, the stage will not have anything new. However, I think costumes or movements also need to be limited. If we have teachers' advice from before, we will know which part should be kept, which part needs to be adjusted" - Ngoc shared.
