Piloting graduation exams on computers, schools worry about shortage of computers

Ho Chi Minh City can pilot the high school graduation exam on computers, but the issue is that it is necessary to prepare carefully about facilities, the exam question bank and the organization method.

Sharing at the conference summarizing the quality management work of the 2025-2026 school year and deploying directions and tasks for the 2026-2027 school year, Mr. Nguyen Van Phong - Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training - said that according to the plan, Ho Chi Minh City may be the pilot locality to organize the high school graduation exam on computers in the 2026-2027 school year.

According to Mr. Phong, the specific exam organization plan will be guided by the Ministry of Education and Training in the near future.

With the large number of students participating in the high school graduation exam, leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training believe that the transition to computer-based exams needs to be carefully prepared, ensuring technical conditions, facilities and organizational procedures.

Schools are ready but worried about computer shortages

On August 26, in an exchange with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Trinh Duy Trong - Principal of Truong Chinh High School (Dong Hung Thuan ward) - said that if the policy of organizing high school graduation exams on computers is implemented, the school is ready to coordinate implementation.

However, if the pilot program is implemented right in 2027, according to Mr. Trong, management agencies need to make specific decisions and instructions soon. This helps schools and students have more time to prepare for facilities, techniques as well as computer test-taking skills.

The school will have to review and prepare a system of machinery and equipment and guide students to get acquainted with the new exam format.

The biggest difficulty currently, according to Mr. Trong, is facilities. The school has about 850 12th grade students but only has 3 computer rooms, each room with about 45 machines.

If the exam is organized for all students, it will be difficult to meet the requirements at the same time. Depending on the scale and pilot plan, the school will have to calculate the arrangement and division of exam shifts," Mr. Trong said.

However, this principal believes that students are not too worried when switching from paper exams to computer exams. Students may need time to get used to the operations, but their computer skills and digital ability are currently quite good.

Truong Chinh High School has also organized surveys and assessments of students' abilities on computers, so it has initial experience with this form.

Mr. Trong supports the option for students to voluntarily choose the exam format during the pilot phase. According to him, when students are proactively registered, they will have a better mindset, and at the same time proactively prepare skills to confidently enter the exam, especially for the first group of students participating in the pilot phase.

Need a roadmap and methodical preparation

And Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu - Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School - said that the organization of the high school graduation exam on computers needs a specific roadmap and methodical preparation.

According to Mr. Phu, first of all, it is necessary to choose suitable subjects for piloting such as Informatics, Foreign Language or subjects with multiple-choice forms such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry. These are subjects with convenient question formats for organization on computers, and at the same time easy to score and control quality.

Regarding the implementation method, Mr. Phu suggested that schools can start from mid-semester I tests, then evaluate, adjust and draw experience before expanding.

Another important factor is building a high-quality question bank with appropriate differentiation, which is built and criticized by specialized teams before use.

In addition, schools selected for piloting need to be guaranteed in terms of computers, transmission lines and technical team support during the inspection process. According to Mr. Phu, these are important conditions to limit technical incidents, ensure the rights and stable psychology for students.
