In early 2025, a large amount of waste accumulated at collection points in Can Tho City, affecting urban aesthetics and people's lives.
According to a reporter's observation on January 3 at the foot of Dau Sau bridge (Hung Loi ward, Ninh Kieu district), garbage was piled up on many garbage transport vehicles, and leachate stagnated on the roadbed, causing an unpleasant odor.
In many other locations in Ninh Kieu district such as in front of the gate of Can Tho Traditional Medicine Hospital, at the foot of Quang Trung bridge, at the foot of Hung Loi bridge, etc., garbage is also piled up and scattered on the road and sidewalk.
In the area under Binh Thuy 2 bridge (Binh Thuy district), on December 26, 2024, Lao Dong reported "Garbage piled up, smelling under Binh Thuy 2 bridge in Can Tho". However, according to records on January 3, 2025, although the amount of garbage has been partially collected and treated, the stench from this garbage dump is still strong.
Many local residents said that this garbage dump is located right on the main road, adjacent to a green park and a gym, causing pollution and directly affecting the health, daily life, and business of residents living around the area.
According to Mr. Luong Si Nam - Head of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Binh Thuy District, because the waste treatment plant is under maintenance, the garbage collection is still slow. Currently, the garbage transport unit makes 4-6 trips per day. Binh Thuy District has also coordinated with the collection unit to spray deodorant to reduce odors, focus on sanitation, solve environmental pollution, and inform some wards to propagate to the people.
At Dong Thang landfill (Co Do district), it was observed that three tall chimneys of the incinerator continuously emitted thick, black smoke, mixed with a strong stench, covering the entire area.
Local residents say the smoke and odor pollution from this incinerator has been going on for many years. Schools and medical stations near the area have been affected, posing a potential risk of respiratory diseases to residents, especially students and children.
According to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE) of Can Tho City, the amount of waste in the city is quite large, with nearly 650 tons per day, exceeding the design capacity of the two existing waste treatment plants. In this situation, the Department has requested the People's Committee of Thoi Lai District and related units to prepare a dossier to propose an investment policy for a 60-hectare household waste treatment project.
The People's Committee of Can Tho City has just issued a Decision on promulgating Regulations on the management of domestic solid waste; plastic waste; routes and transportation time of domestic waste, ordinary industrial solid waste, and hazardous waste. This Decision takes effect from January 6, 2025.
Accordingly, for routes in urban areas, vehicles are allowed to operate from 7:00 p.m. the previous day to 5:00 a.m. the following day.
