Date 11.8, Mr. Lê Đức Tiến – Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quảng Trị Province confirmed, the People's Committee of Quảng Trị Province has recently proposed the Ministry of Transport to consider and approve the plan to urgently dredge the Cửa Việt shipping channel (Gio Linh District, Quảng Trị Province).
According to Mr. Lê Đức Tiến, the Cửa Việt shipping channel is managed by the Vietnam Maritime Administration, which is a division of the Ministry of Transport. According to the master plan, the Cửa Việt Port Area is a local general port, capable of accommodating large-tonnage vessels, with a standard water depth of -5.6m.
However, the Cửa Việt shipping channel has been severely filled in and currently only has a depth of 2.5m, causing many difficulties and safety risks for fishing vessels, coast guard forces, and businesses entering the Cửa Việt Port Area.
The filling in of the shipping channel has been ongoing for many years. In 2023, the People's Committee of Quảng Trị Province assigned the Cửa Việt Port Joint Stock Company to implement an urgent dredging project. However, due to the short duration of the dredging project, only approximately 20,000m3 of sand was dredged, and the depth of the shipping channel after dredging was approximately -3.6m. However, the shipping channel was again filled in due to weather conditions at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.
“Given that the budget for the maintenance and dredging of the Cửa Việt shipping channel in 2024 has not been allocated, to ensure safety and convenience for vessels entering the port, the People's Committee of Quảng Trị Province has proposed the Ministry of Transport to approve the plan to allow the province to select a capable unit to implement the urgent dredging of the Cửa Việt shipping channel using other legitimate sources of funding outside the state budget” – Mr. Lê Đức Tiến stated.
It is worth noting that due to the filling in of the Cửa Việt shipping channel, some vessels that passed through have been stranded, causing significant losses.
