RT reported that on September 27, the Pentagon confirmed that Houthi forces in Yemen attacked US Navy warships in the Middle East with drones and cruise missiles. Earlier in the day, Houthi also announced that they had attacked three US destroyers heading towards Israel in the Red Sea.
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh confirmed that US Navy ships were attacked but insisted that no damage occurred.
"We saw a complex attack by the Houthis using cruise missiles and UAVs. My understanding is that those attacks were either thwarted or unsuccessful. None of the attacks hit any US ships," Ms. Singh said at a press conference on September 27.
Meanwhile, the Houthi-run al-Masirah television station quoted the group's spokesman as saying that the Houthis had targeted three US Navy destroyers "supporting Israel" with 23 ballistic and cruise missiles and a drone.
The spokesman confirmed that all three ships were directly hit, adding that the attack involved missiles and drones simultaneously launched at targets in Israel.
The spokesman said these operations "will not stop until the aggression in Gaza and Lebanon ends".
The Yemeni armed group has been attacking ships believed to be linked to Israel in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since last October, in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid Israel's ongoing campaign in the enclave.
Houthi attacks on shipping through one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes have prompted the US and its allies to form an international naval coalition and deploy warships to the region. Western and Israeli bombing of Yemen this year has not appeared to deter the group.
Following recent escalations between Hezbollah and Israel, the Houthis have added to their list of demands an end to Israel's aggression against Lebanon.
Although Hezbollah militants in Lebanon and Israel have frequently exchanged fire since the start of the war in Gaza, hostilities spiked in early September after thousands of pagers and other handheld devices exploded across Lebanon, killing dozens and injuring thousands.
Israel then declared a "new phase" in the war in Gaza and stepped up airstrikes on Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah assets.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, as of September 27, more than 1,300 people have died in Israeli bombings.
