On September 16, Steering Committee 389 of Can Tho City held a conference to review the work of combating smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods in the first 9 months of 2025, deploying tasks for the last months of the year.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Vuong Quoc Nam - Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, Head of Steering Committee 389 affirmed that in recent times, departments, branches and functional forces have made efforts to implement the peak of the fight against smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, and infringement of intellectual property rights. Thanks to that, many positive results have been achieved, contributing to preventing and repelling violations, protecting the rights of people and businesses.
However, Mr. Nam also pointed out that in reality, there are still many difficulties and challenges. "For the purpose of profit, counterfeit goods are cheap but selling at real prices is a high profit, so this situation is still complicated," he said.
To rectify, Mr. Nam requested the City Steering Committee 389 and related units to launch a peak period of inspection, strictly handling smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit goods; focusing on goods of unknown origin, fake food and medicine, and fake health protection products. At the same time, mobilize the entire political system to participate, proactively detect and prevent in a timely manner, protect the health and legitimate rights of the people.
Mr. Nam emphasized the need to strengthen inspection of moon cakes during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival. With the diversity of designs and needs for children, products must ensure safety, hygiene, and protect the health of consumers, he said.
A representative of Can Tho City Police added that the main violating items are cigarettes, cosmetics, functional foods, consumer goods, and electronic components. The tricks of the subjects are increasingly sophisticated such as changing the design of means of transportation to conceal goods; using invoices and documents to legalize smuggled goods; fraud in production, tax evasion; selling counterfeit goods and counterfeit goods through e-commerce platforms and social networks.
According to Steering Committee 389, in the first 9 months of 2025, departments, branches and functional forces of Can Tho City conducted 4,773 inspections and examinations, detecting 622 violations, a decrease of 1,601 cases compared to the same period last year. The total amount of money spent on handling violations reached over VND7.68 billion, down 87.23%. Of which, administrative fines were more than VND 7.52 billion, tax collection was VND 112 million, and sales of confiscated goods were nearly VND 41 million. The value of the confiscated goods was more than 674 million VND.
In particular, violations related to trading and transporting prohibited goods, smuggled goods, trade fraud and counterfeit goods were 622 cases, down 1,035 cases compared to the same period. Of which, there were 252 cases of banned goods, smuggled goods; 304 cases of trade fraud; 66 cases of counterfeit goods. The force has prosecuted 75 cases with 122 subjects, although the number of prosecutions decreased by 64, the number of subjects increased by 4 compared to the same period.
