Retail sales of goods continue to be the main driving force of Ho Chi Minh City's trade and services, contributing to promoting consumption and expanding the year-end market.

Purchasing power increases, supermarkets are bustling

Recorded at some retail systems such as Co.opmart, GO!, MM Mega Market and WinMart in Ho Chi Minh City, the number of shoppers is quite stable. The stalls for fresh food, vegetables, household goods and essential consumer goods always have a rich source of goods, many items are subject to discount and promotion programs.

At Cong Quynh Co.opmart (Cau Ong Lanh ward), the fresh food and consumer goods area attracts many customers in the afternoon. Meat, fish, and green vegetables are continuously added, with stable selling prices.

Meanwhile, at MM Mega Market An Phu (An Khanh ward), many domestic manufacturing enterprises are also promoting new product introduction programs, combined with promotions to stimulate consumer demand.

Ms. Le Phuong Thao (resident of Binh Thanh ward) said that her family always prioritizes shopping at the supermarket because of stable prices, goods of clear origin and frequent discount programs.

I see that many essential items still maintain prices, and even have weekly discounts, so living expenses are less pressured" - Ms. Thao shared.

Domestic market becomes a fulcrum

According to Mr. Le Anh Hoang - Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Trade and Investment Promotion Center (ITPC), the world economy is facing many fluctuations when high inflation reduces purchasing power in many large markets, while trade protectionist barriers increase and pressure from tax imposition affects the production, business and export activities of Vietnamese enterprises.

In addition, logistics costs continue to be high due to the impact of oil prices and geopolitical instability in some areas.

In that context, according to Mr. Hoang, effectively exploiting the domestic market with more than 100 million people, while strengthening connections with modern domestic distribution systems, is an important direction to create stable and sustainable output for Vietnamese goods.

Reality shows that purchasing power in Ho Chi Minh City still maintains a positive upward trend. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, total retail sales of goods and service revenue in July 2026 are estimated at 170,067 billion VND, an increase of 16.3% compared to the same period last year.

Accumulated in the first 7 months of the year, commercial service revenue is estimated at 1,133,721 billion VND, an increase of 13.3%; retail sales of goods alone reached about 536,403 billion VND, an increase of 16.7% compared to the same period. This continues to be the main driving force for the growth of the city's commercial service sector.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the market in the area is generally stable, the supply of goods is abundant, circulation activities are smooth, and there is no shortage or sudden price increase. The distribution system from traditional markets to supermarkets, shopping centers and modern retail platforms is increasingly diverse, meeting the shopping needs of people well.

To maintain consumer growth momentum, in the last months of 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade will continue to synchronously implement many solutions.

In which, the focus is on effectively implementing the 2026 Market Stabilization Program and serving the 2027 Dinh Mui Tet; promoting programs to stimulate consumer demand, connect supply and demand and expand the domestic market.

At the same time, the city will continue to develop modern commercial infrastructure, expand consumer space, promote digital transformation in the commercial sector, and improve the quality of goods and enhance market transparency.

These solutions are expected not only to contribute to maintaining supply and price stability at the end of the year but also to create more motivation for businesses to expand product consumption and effectively exploit the purchasing power of the domestic market in the context of many challenges for exports.
