Large room from market demand and production shift
According to a report by the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), livestock farming currently contributes 25-28% of agricultural production value, about 5% of GDP and is a livelihood for millions of households. The industry is shifting towards modernization, increasing the proportion of farm and industrial livestock farming, and better disease control. The trend of developing linkage chains, applying technology, and deeply participating businesses helps improve productivity, quality and competitiveness.
It is noteworthy that the potential of the industry is no longer in increasing herds, but in the shift from quantitative growth to qualitative growth.
According to Mr. Pham Kim Dang - Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine, consumers are currently not only concerned about the quantity of products but also increasingly placing higher requirements on nutrition, food safety, traceability, and quarantine certification.
This is both a challenge and an opportunity for Vietnam's livestock industry to restructure in a modern direction, increase value and meet the increasingly demanding needs of the market" - Mr. Dang emphasized.
In Nghe An, in 2025, livestock growth increased by 5.61%, accounting for 50.6% of agricultural value. Large herd size, high meat, milk, and egg output. The whole province has nearly 1,000 farms and many linked models with businesses, contributing to reducing costs, improving quality and sustainable development.
In recent years, the livestock sector has had many positive changes; the productivity and quality of meat, eggs, and milk products have been constantly improved" - Mr. Dang Van Minh - Head of the Sub-Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Nghe An province - said.
Meanwhile, Hanoi - a place with a high urbanization rate - the proportion of the livestock industry still accounts for 60% of agricultural production value and meets about 60% of people's food consumption needs.
Although the land fund is narrowed, Hanoi still orients itself to develop biological livestock and high-tech application livestock. This shows that even in a large city, livestock still has a lot of room if restructured reasonably.
To promote potential, it must go through chains, technology and disease safety.
Despite achieving positive results, Vietnamese livestock farming is still limited in competition due to high costs, epidemics and strict standards. The industry needs to restructure towards biosafety, improve breed quality and reduce costs to enhance competitiveness.
Mr. Pham Kim Dang - Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine - emphasized: "To develop the livestock industry in a sustainable, modern direction and increase product value, it is necessary to focus on synchronously implementing many key solutions, in which special attention should be paid to reorganizing production, applying science and technology and developing value chains throughout the industry.
First of all, it is necessary to promote the development of livestock farming according to a closed value chain, strengthening links between stages in the production process.
Promoting the application of science and technology in animal husbandry is an important factor to improve productivity, quality and production efficiency.
In parallel with that, it is necessary to promote research and application of biotechnology in breeding livestock with high productivity, good disease resistance, and at the same time improve efficiency in disease prevention and control.
It is necessary to develop the processing industry of livestock products, plan and develop a system of centralized and modern slaughterhouses, gradually replacing small and scattered slaughterhouses, focusing on developing domestic animal feed raw material sources.
At the press conference of the first National Conference on Livestock and Veterinary Science and Technology held on March 23, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien also requested the livestock industry to continuously update and apply modern technology in the barn system...
