At the workshop “Semiconductor Industry Strategy: New driving force for Vietnam and Hanoi” held on December 3, Mr. Nguyen Khac Lich - Director of the Department of Information Technology and Industry, Ministry of Information and Communications - said that on September 21, 2024, the Prime Minister signed and promulgated the Strategy for developing Vietnam's semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2050. This is the first time Vietnam has had such a long-term strategy.
Based on the global context and national reality, Vietnam has proposed a path to develop the semiconductor industry according to the formula: C=SET+1.
Accordingly, Vietnam will focus on the production of specialized (C) chips - Specialized (S), developing the electronics industry in parallel with the chip development industry - (E) Electronics, thereby making products smart and to do that, the focus is on developing a team of human resources and talents - Talent (T). At the same time, it will also anticipate the X+1 shift trend, creating conditions for Vietnam to emerge as a new safe destination in the global supply chain of the semiconductor industry.
"To participate in the global semiconductor value chain, Vietnam cannot follow the traditional electronics industry but needs to develop a new generation of electronics industry alongside the semiconductor industry. That is AI-izing all traditional household and specialized electronic devices," Mr. Nguyen Khac Lich emphasized.
Sharing about the tasks and breakthrough solutions in developing the semiconductor industry, Mr. Nguyen Khac Lich said that Vietnam needs to master research and technology development in the field of semiconductors and electronics, if it does not want to become a processing country, in which it promotes geopolitical advantages, follows investment trends, focuses on developing electricity and water infrastructure as well as has preferential and supportive mechanisms and policies...
With the advantages that Vietnam has, Ms. Linda Tan - President of the Southeast Asia Semiconductor Association (SEMI) - commented that Vietnam is in the process of strong digital transformation, being one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia. SEMI representative pointed out four factors that have, are and will help Vietnam become a key "player" in the global supply chain.
First, Vietnam has “political stability and great government determination” in promoting the development of the semiconductor industry, with a clear roadmap and goals for three stages.
Second, Vietnam has a favorable geographical location, close to some of the largest global markets today such as China and ASEAN, and located on key shipping routes with easy access to Europe and North America.
Third, with a young and technology-savvy population, Vietnam has a potential human resource to supply the semiconductor industry with relatively competitive labor costs compared to other markets.
Fourth, FDI enterprises are playing a major role in promoting Vietnam’s economy. Big names such as Samsung, Amkor, Intel, Micron, Marvell, Infineon… all have factories in Vietnam, further strengthening Vietnam’s position in the global supply chain.
