Digital transformation and green transformation have become top priorities.
In recent years, green transformation has become the target of many countries in the world, including Vietnam. To implement this goal, Vietnam is implementing many important strategies such as the National Strategy on Green Growth for the period 2021-2030, vision to 2050, and the National Strategy on Climate Change for the period up to 2050.
The 13th National Party Congress document clearly stated the goal of striving to complete the construction of a digital government by 2030, with a digital economy reaching about 30% of GDP and ranking among the top 50 countries in the world and ranking 3rd in the ASEAN region in terms of e-government and digital economy.
Speaking at the workshop “Pioneering dual transformation for a greener Vietnam” organized by Investment Newspaper on November 12, Mr. Le Viet Anh - Director of the Department of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Planning and Investment emphasized that digital transformation helps optimize production and business processes, reduce costs and enhance competitiveness through automation, data analysis and effective information management...
According to calculations by the Ministry of Information and Communications, in 2020, Vietnam's digital economy contributed 12% of GDP, but by 2023, the digital economy contributed 16.5% of GDP and with a growth rate of over 20% per year.
According to Mr. Le Viet Anh, currently, digital transformation and green transformation have become top priorities of most countries in the world towards long-term sustainable development.
However, a representative of the Ministry of Planning and Investment said that these two processes are currently taking place mainly separately, without synchronization to maximize the potential to increase productivity and efficiency for businesses and economic activities of the economy in general.
Ms. Do Le Thu Ngoc - Head of Inclusive Development, UNDP in Vietnam analyzed that for dual transformation in Vietnam, it can be seen that large enterprises will often have the ability to approach faster and move from awareness to action more clearly. Meanwhile, small and medium-sized enterprises are mostly just at the awareness stage, without many changes or clear actions. Meanwhile, the group of micro-enterprises or business sectors such as cooperatives and individual business households have almost no awareness or actions to change towards Dual Transformation.
Digital transformation is an important driving force to promote green transformation success.
The World Bank (WB) 2023 report on the dual transformation trend points out the connection between digital technology and green technology. Based on research and evaluation using patent data, 16 green technologies and 11 digital technologies were selected as the foundation for dual transformation. According to this report, in the period 2017-2021, Vietnam held 15% of the total 493 green patents in emerging markets, behind Malaysia (51%) and Thailand (20%).
Most of Vietnam’s green transformation technology patents are related to fields such as wind energy, waste management, air and water pollution reduction, and green buildings. Meanwhile, in terms of digital transformation technologies, Vietnam accounts for only 8% of the total 537 patents of developing economies, behind Malaysia (58%), the Philippines (16%) and Thailand (11%).
Analyzing from the WB report, Mr. Le Viet Anh affirmed that digital transformation is an important driving force to promote the success of green transformation and the dual transformation trend - digital transformation in parallel with green transformation - is an inevitable trend that the business community in Vietnam also needs to grasp to take advantage of new business opportunities as well as bring sustainable benefits to society and the environment.
