Businesses include energy saving in KPI to reduce production costs

Changing equipment, optimizing operation, installing sensors to monitor electricity consumption and exploiting rooftop solar power are becoming solutions that businesses are applying to reduce production costs.

Electricity bill reduced from 70 million VND to 45 million VND/month

As a small and medium-sized enterprise, Dony Garment Co., Ltd. began to save and use energy from changing equipment, adjusting operating methods and raising workers' awareness, which helped Dony significantly reduce electricity bills.

Mr. Pham Quang Anh - Director of Dony Garment Co., Ltd. - said that previously the average electricity bill cost of the enterprise was about 70 million VND/month. After synchronously implementing many energy saving and efficiency solutions, this number decreased to about 45 million VND/month. It is worth mentioning that Dony does not implement a single energy saving project to create this reduction but must synthesize many solutions.

The first important factor is to change the awareness of energy use in the entire enterprise. Previously, between shifts, many electrical equipment and lighting were still allowed to operate even though workers had gone out to rest. The seemingly small electricity consumption but repeated every day eventually became a significant cost. The enterprise began to tighten the operating process, requiring unnecessary equipment to be turned off when not in use. This change does not require the enterprise to spend a large investment. The issue is to create habits and discipline in energy use throughout the factory" - Mr. Pham Quang Anh said.

To continue to promote energy saving and efficient use, businesses continue to review and replace inefficient electricity consumption equipment without waiting for machinery to break down. According to Mr. Quang Anh, old equipment not only reduces efficiency but also forces businesses to use more equipment to compensate for capacity.

Previously, businesses used a large boiler system. Each operation, the system had to be started, although at times only about 20-30% of people needed to use it. This caused the equipment to operate at high capacity while the actual demand was low. The company replaced the old technology boiler system with many smaller boilers, more modern technology. If previously one system could serve about 9-10 people at the same time, now each small boiler only serves about 2 people, making operation more convenient and suitable for actual needs.

Mr. Quang Anh said that for many small and medium-sized enterprises to boldly invest in energy saving, just mobilizing businesses to raise awareness is not enough. What businesses need more is a sufficiently stable environment for them to dare to spend money to invest.

Energy saving support policies are not necessarily just about directly supporting businesses to buy equipment. More importantly, removing legal barriers, simplifying procedures and creating stability so that businesses can calculate longer" - Mr. Quang Anh proposed.

Energy saving must become part of KPI

As for Cicor Vietnam Company, a member of Cicor Group (Switzerland), the enterprise focuses on optimizing many systems simultaneously, from HVAC in clean rooms, compressed air to heating equipment and plastic pressing machines.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Luat - General Director of Cicor Vietnam Company, a member of Cicor Group (Switzerland) - said that the company builds an energy management system, combined with smart sensors installed at each production stage to monitor energy consumption in real time. Thanks to that, businesses can know exactly which devices are consuming a lot of energy, the consumption level at each time and the operating efficiency.

The important thing is that energy saving must become a part of the KPI of each department and each individual, not just the responsibility of the technical department. Every month, the indicators are summarized and reported so that factory leaders know where they are reaching compared to the set target. If the saving level does not meet the requirements, businesses must find the cause and have timely adjustment measures.

In addition to technical and technological solutions, Mr. Nguyen Trong Luat said that Cicor Vietnam has also cooperated in deploying rooftop solar power since about 2023. Currently, the system is being deployed at the fourth factory, with 1,360 panels for a roof area of about 2,600m2, helping businesses use electricity for many machines in production activities.
