Can Tho gardeners face pressure from Tet flower production costs

Can Tho - Erratic weather, coupled with rising material prices, makes Tet flower gardeners worried about affecting production costs and profits.

This Tet crop, Ms. Huynh Thi Lieu (a gardener in Tan Long A hamlet, Phong Dien commune, Can Tho city) is somewhat worried when pots of ornamental chili peppers are attacked by pests, causing yields to decrease sharply, even having to be discarded.

According to Ms. Lieu, the cause stems from unseasonal rains, creating conditions for pests to develop. Although pesticides have been sprayed and many different ways have been found, chili plants are still stunted, stunted, and have fallen leaves.

Harmful worms are present every year, but this crop the level of increase is clear. I planted about 500 pots of ornamental peppers, the average investment cost is about 15,000 VND/pot. But so far, about 150 pots have been abandoned due to damage. Fortunately, other types of ornamental flowers in the garden are not affected," Ms. Lieu shared.

Seeding about 1,000 pots of various types of flowers to supply the Tet market, Mr. Duong Lich Su (a gardener in Tan Long A hamlet, Phong Dien commune, Can Tho city) is also facing difficulties due to unfavorable weather. This gardener shared that erratic sun and rain have caused the flower leaves to burn yellow. In addition, many pots of chrysanthemums have been planted early from 7-20 days.

We have to try our best to take care of and adjust the amount of fertilizer. Because if we don't handle it in time, the early-blooming flower pots will degrade color, lose value, and may cause damage of 50,000 - 60,000 VND/pot," Mr. Su said.

At Pho Tho - Ba Bo flower and ornamental plant village (Long Hoa ward, Can Tho city), Mr. Vo Ngoc An was also worried when the cost of input materials for this crop increased by about 20% compared to the same period. "The price of straw manure has increased by more than 30,000 VND/bag; fertilizers and pesticides have also increased by about 10%. This leads to an additional investment cost for each flower pot of 3,000-5,000 VND/pot," Mr. An calculated.

What worries this farmer more is the increase in input costs, but flower prices are very difficult to increase accordingly. Because if the price is too high, traders will hesitate to import goods, especially when the Tet flower market in recent years has been quite gloomy. To make a profit, Mr. An's family chooses to increase prices at an acceptable level and take the quantity as profit.

Mr. Le Khac Huy - Director of Tan Long A ornamental flower cooperative (Phong Dien commune, Can Tho city) - said that in the 2026 Tet season, the cooperative sowed about 50,000 pots of all kinds. Notably, the number of Taiwanese chrysanthemums decreased sharply due to difficult techniques and high labor costs.

While the weather situation at the beginning of the season is relatively favorable, the later it gets, the more difficult it becomes, causing flowers to bloom early. Therefore, gardeners are forced to supplement fertilizer to "restrain" plants from flowering slowly, and production costs are also increased because of this.

According to Mr. Huy's estimates, production costs are currently increasing by about 20-30%. Gardeners have to spend an additional 3,000-4,000 VND/small pot and tens of thousands of VND for large pots to invest in Tet flowers. Meanwhile, flower prices are only stable and difficult to increase due to the market's fairly sluggish purchasing power.

The number of traders buying is decreasing sharply compared to last year. Gardeners have to switch to retailing at markets. Although it is more difficult, it will help sell all the flowers," Mr. Huy said.

According to the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City), by the end of 2025, gardeners in the area had sown more than 850,000 flower pots to serve the 2026 Lunar New Year market. In which, people focus on familiar varieties such as chrysanthemums, marigolds, sand walls,...
