Nearly 40 years attached to coastal shrimp ponds, Mr. Nguyen Van Ba's household (in Giao Ninh commune, Ninh Binh province) is known by many as one of the typical shrimp farming households in the locality. From a traditional farming model heavily dependent on weather, Mr. Ba's family has now built a methodical shrimp farming area, applying high technology, bringing in billions of VND in revenue each year.
Leading us to visit the large swamp area with 50 shrimp ponds, Mr. Ba recounted that in 1989, he started shrimp farming. "At that time, I mainly followed experience, listening to each other. There were years of big profits, but there were also years of losses due to epidemics and erratic weather," Mr. Ba recalled.
Not accepting fragmented methods, Mr. Ba invested in a system, applying the white leg shrimp farming process according to a high-tech model.

Mr. Ba shared: "High-tech shrimp farming requires farmers to invest in systematic equipment, such as having bulb and fans. Depending on the pond, invest in the appropriate number of fans combined with bulb. The density of shrimp is as thick as possible, then add fans to that density, if farming shrimp with a denser density, it may be necessary to use 5-6 fans. Besides, shrimp farmers like us must have a very good understanding of shrimp to be able to farm high technology".
To ensure the shrimp farming process, Mr. Ba built additional roof frames above the farming ponds. In the summer, he uses black nets to cover the entire pond to reduce the intensity of light, and in the winter, he uses nylon to cover the base of the pond to keep the shrimp warm. Therefore, the farming pond environment has little fluctuation, and stable temperatures help Mr. Ba raise shrimp all year round, even in the winter.
Thanks to good process control, his family raises 2 crops each year, with a production of tens of tons of commercial shrimp. After deducting expenses, the profit earned is billions of VND.
Mr. Doan Phi Truong - Vice Chairman of Giao Ninh Commune People's Committee said that Mr. Ba's high-tech shrimp farming model is one of the prominent households in the locality for many years and is an effective direction, suitable for the coastal conditions. Currently, this model not only helps Mr. Ba's family develop the economy, but also creates jobs for many local workers.
