Thanks to the sharp increase in selling prices, cocoa trees are becoming a new economic choice for many gardeners in Tra On district. Currently, the price of high-protein coffee beans has increased nearly 3 times, from 5,500 VND to 17,000 VND/kg, bringing a stable source of income to growers.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nho (Tan My commune) - one of the long-time cocoa growers - said: "The cocoa garden is intercropped with coconut to produce even fruit, less pests and diseases, the output is supported by the cooperative, so my family is assured to expand nearly 1 hectare of land to continue growing".
Currently, the whole district of Tra Ong has more than 300 hectares of cocoa trees, mainly distributed in Tan My, Tra Con, Vinh Xuan, Tich Thien, Luc Si Thanh, Xuan Hiep communes and Tra On town.
Accompanying farmers is Tich Khanh Agricultural Cooperative - a unit that supplies seedlings and materials, while purchasing high-priced cocoa at reasonable prices, contributing to stabilizing output and increasing product value.
The agricultural sector of Tra On district encourages the expansion of the organic cocoa model associated with consumption linkage, in order to develop the garden economy in an effective and sustainable direction.
