Phu Quy island district, in Binh Thuan province, is located about 56 nautical miles from the mainland, with a natural area of about 18 km2 with 3 communes and a population of about 30,000 people. With its strategic location and rich marine resources, Phu Quy has identified the development of the marine economy as a spearhead, focusing on two main pillars: aquaculture and tourism.
After 50 years of liberation (April 27, 1975 - April 27, 2025), although far from the mainland, this frontline island has had a major change, increasingly improving with a stable economy and sustainable development, people's quality of life has clearly improved, national security and defense are maintained.
Phu Quy District Party Secretary - Nguyen Quoc Thang said that the marine economy is a spearhead economic sector, a breakthrough of the district, focusing on exploitation capacity, fishing output, processing production and farming associated with tourism and services.

To date, there are 1,735 boats on the island with 7,540 workers. The average annual seafood output is over 32,000 tons. The transportation system, sea erosion embankment, storm shelter boat anchorage area, freshwater lake, and hospital on the island have been completed.
With many improvements in socio-economic development, since 2015, Phu Quy district has been the first district in the province to be recognized as a new rural district.
The number of tourists to the island has been constantly increasing, so since 2014, electricity has been provided continuously for 24 hours on the island. 4G network has covered the entire island to serve the lives of people and tourists.

Currently, people and tourists traveling to the island is easier with 3 high-speed trains in operation. The shortened itinerary only takes 2.5 hours to get to the island.

Notable innovation in the island district is the accommodation system with nearly 170 hotels, motels, and homestays that have sprung up and come into operation, especially the resort that meets the constantly increasing accommodation needs of tourists.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Hai - Vice Chairman of Binh Thuan People's Committee highly appreciated the development of the island district, in which the tourism service has just been formed but has risen to join the marine economy to become the main economic sector of the district. In the near future, Phu Quy district will be organized into a special zone on the basis of merging 3 communes today. The role, functions and duties of the Party Committee and the special zone will have innovations. However, the role and strategic position on national defense and security and the main tasks on wealthy construction and development will still be maintained, inherited and followed.

In the process of development, Phu Quy island district determined to protect the environment and island sovereignty. Therefore, Phu Quy District Party Secretary Nguyen Quoc Thang said that he will continue to focus on the environment, maintain fresh water sources, promote the planting of forests and trees and build a clean and beautiful green landscape.
