For the first time, import-export turnover reached 900 billion USD

On December 25, 2025, in Hanoi, the Customs Department (Ministry of Finance) held a ceremony to record the total value of Vietnam's goods exports reaching 900 billion USD and a conference to summarize the work in 2025, the work direction in 2026 of the Customs Department.

According to data published at the conference, the Customs Department said that Vietnam's total import-export turnover in 2025 is estimated to reach about 920 billion USD, an increase of 16.9% compared to 2024. Of which, export turnover is estimated at 470.59 billion USD, up 15.9%; import reached 449.41 billion USD, up 18%. Thus, the trade balance continues to maintain a state of over-export at 21.2 billion USD.

This is a special milestone, bringing Vietnam to join the group of economies with an import-export turnover of over 900 billion USD for the first time, while affirming Vietnam's increasingly high position in the global trade chain. Compared to when it joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2007, when the total turnover had just reached 100 billion USD, Vietnam's trade scale has increased nearly 9 times in less than two decades.

Notably, import-export turnover of foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) continues to play a key role, reaching about 663 billion USD, accounting for 72% of the total turnover of the country. Meanwhile, the domestic business sector reached about 257 billion USD, remaining stable in the context of many fluctuations in the global economy.

The structure of import-export goods continues to show a shift towards industrialization and modernization. The group of industrial processing and manufacturing products accounts for about 85% of total export turnover, notably computers, electronic components, phones, machinery and equipment. In the opposite direction, imports focus on raw materials for production, machinery, and equipment, reflecting Vietnam's role in the global supply chain.

Many solutions are implemented to facilitate trade

Speaking at the ceremony, Director of the Customs Department Nguyen Van Tho commented: "In 2025, the world and regional situation will develop complicatedly, and fierce strategic competition between economies, especially the US's countervailing tax application, has affected the movement of goods, production, and import and export. In the country, natural disasters and floods have occurred consecutively, directly affecting production and business activities, significantly affecting economic growth".

In that difficult context, Vietnam's economy still achieved many positive achievements, with Vietnam's total import-export turnover reaching 900 billion USD for the first time - the highest level ever, continuing to affirm that Vietnam is an economy with great openness, deep integration and a bright spot in regional and global trade.

The leader of the Customs Department said that in recent times, the Customs sector has synchronously implemented many solutions to facilitate trade and reduce costs for businesses. Measures to reform administrative procedures, apply information technology, digital transformation in customs management are being promoted; inspection, supervision, traffic flow, and risk management are improved in efficiency, both facilitating and ensuring legal discipline.

By December 18, 2025, the total state budget revenue through the Customs sector reached more than VND 448,500 billion, equal to 109.1% of the estimate, up 9.3% over the same period last year, contributing significantly to the national budget balance.

Creating a foundation for sustainable growth and deep integration

Along with budget collection, the Customs sector continues to promote reforms and modernization, focusing on fundamental solutions such as: perfecting institutions, applying digital technology, improving risk management efficiency and post-clearance inspection.

In 2025, the industry has implemented many measures to shorten customs clearance time and reduce costs for businesses, including increasing automated traffic flow, standardizing business processes and expanding the mechanism of one national gate, one ASEAN gate.

In addition, the work of preventing and combating smuggling and trade fraud continues to be strengthened, contributing to ensuring a fair and transparent business environment. The implementation of a program to encourage businesses to voluntarily comply with customs laws also creates positive changes, promoting cooperative relationships between management agencies and the business community.
