On July 26, Lam Dong province held a ceremony to announce the first aluminum ingot product produced in Vietnam at Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant (Nhan Co Industrial Park, Nhan Co commune).
Attending the ceremony were General Phan Van Giang - Member of the Politburo, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defense, along with leaders of central ministries and sectors and Lam Dong province.
Milestone of Vietnam's metallurgy industry
After more than 11 years of investment and construction, Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant successfully produced the first aluminum ingots, marking the first time Vietnam has completed the value chain from bauxite mining, alumina production to aluminum metal electrolysis.
The first product achieved purity of 99.71%. Phase 1 of the factory has a capacity of 150,000 tons/year, expected to increase to 300,000 tons by the end of 2026 and reach a designed capacity of 450,000 tons/year in the first quarter of 2027.
Speaking at the ceremony, General Phan Van Giang affirmed that the successful production of aluminum ingots is a historical milestone of Vietnam's metallurgy industry, realizing the policy of developing deep-processing mineral industries, improving added value and the self-reliance capacity of the economy.
According to the General, the project affirms the ability to master technology, management level and human resource quality of Vietnamese enterprises; creating a shift from exporting raw materials and semi-finished products to producing materials to serve the electricity, mechanical engineering, automobile, railway, aviation, defense, construction and high technology industries.
Vietnam currently has about 5.8 billion tons of bauxite resources, mainly in the Central Highlands. When completed in 2027, the plant will reach a capacity of 450,000 tons of aluminum/year, creating a production value of about 35,000-36,000 billion VND, contributing to reducing aluminum imports by about 1.5 billion USD per year.
The project is expected to employ more than 1,000 direct workers and create about 3,500-4,000 jobs.
General Phan Van Giang requested ministries and sectors to continue to improve mechanisms and policies for developing the aluminum industry; support businesses in researching and mastering modern metallurgy technology, training high-quality human resources and promoting digital transformation in production.
At the same time, Lam Dong province needs to continue to invest in transportation infrastructure, energy, logistics, and administrative procedure reform to attract deep processing projects after aluminum.
Forming an aluminum industrial ecosystem
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Y Thanh Ha Nie Kdam - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Lam Dong Provincial Party Committee - said: The successful production of the first aluminum ingots is not only the pride of the locality but also marks a new step in the development of Vietnam's metallurgy industry, opening up opportunities to form an aluminum industrial value chain in the Central Highlands.
According to the Secretary of the Lam Dong Provincial Party Committee, this achievement is the result of the coordination process between the Central Government, localities and businesses.
Since the project was implemented in 2012, the province has always accompanied in compensation, site clearance, infrastructure investment, ensuring security and order and removing difficulties for the project to be completed.
Leaders of Lam Dong province said that the first aluminum ingot product will promote the development of processing industry and high technology in Lam Dong and the Central Highlands, contributing to economic restructuring, creating jobs and improving the value of bauxite resources.
Lam Dong will continue to invest in transportation infrastructure, logistics, energy; train human resources, reform administrative procedures and attract deep processing projects, gradually forming a modern aluminum industrial ecosystem.
According to provincial leaders, closing the bauxite - alumin - aluminum chain will increase resource value, promote the new material industry and create development momentum for Lam Dong and the Central Highlands.
