The 2025 shrimp industry faces many difficulties

Sharing with Lao Dong reporter, a representative of the Department of Fisheries said that the area of brackish water shrimp farming in 2024 will reach 749.8 thousand hectares, an increase of 1.7% compared to 2023. Shrimp output reached 1.29 million tons, up 15.3% over the previous year.
The Department of Animal Health also reported that the area of shrimp damaged by the epidemic in 2024 was 21,726 hectares, down 5.7% compared to the previous year. Common diseases such as acute pancreatic necrotizing and white spots continue to occur but have been better controlled thanks to strict disease monitoring.
However, in 2025, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that the shrimp industry faces many challenges. The demand of the world shrimp market is showing signs of recovery but is still not really stable due to the slow recovery of the global economy, affecting the purchasing power and consumption of shrimp products.
It is forecasted that in 2025, shrimp exports will grow thanks to the adjustment of production strategies and expansion of export markets. However, competitive pressure from the world's leading shrimp producers such as Ecuador, India and Thailand is still huge.
In addition, strict regulations from the US and EU markets on traceability and quality standards have forced Vietnamese export enterprises to improve their competitiveness to maintain market share.

Take advantage of the shrimp industry in 2025
Faced with the above difficulties and challenges, authorities and businesses have proposed many solutions to remove and take advantage of development opportunities in 2025.
The Department of Fisheries believes that it is necessary to improve the quality of breeds and control epidemics to reduce risks in production. Research, development and replication of models for producing disease-free, high-quality shrimp seeds will help improve productivity.
The Department of Animal Health said it will step up disease supervision, strictly implement preventive measures, especially control acute pancreatic necrotizing disease and white spots.
Meanwhile, VASEP emphasized that expanding export markets and improving competitiveness are key factors. It is necessary to increase trade promotion and expand export markets, especially in Japan, Korea and China. At the same time, businesses need to improve product standards to meet strict requirements on quality and traceability.

Despite facing many challenges, the Vietnamese shrimp industry still has advantages to thrive in 2025. Global shrimp consumption demand is showing signs of recovery after a period of decline, creating opportunities to increase exports. The Government continues to promote policies for developing the seafood industry, supporting businesses and shrimp farmers.
advances in shrimp farming technology, environmental treatment and disease control help reduce risks, increase productivity and production efficiency. In addition, the cooperative model and the production - consumption chain are increasingly replicated, helping the shrimp industry improve sustainability.
