Great strides in production and export
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) said that in 2024, agricultural production will face severe drought, saltwater intrusion and damage from storm No. 3 (Yagi). However, thanks to the close direction of the Party, the National Assembly, the Government and the solidarity of all levels, sectors and farmers, the whole sector has achieved a growth rate of 3.3% in production value.
The economic structure of the industry continues to shift positively, focusing on high-value products. The annual rice output reached nearly 43.7 million tons, of which 9 million tons were exported. Some key crops such as durian, dragon fruit and rubber recorded outstanding growth.
In the livestock sector, meat output reached 8.1 million tons, up 3.5%; aquatic product output reached 9.6 million tons, up 2.4%. Many organic and ecological agricultural models were replicated, creating the premise for sustainable development.
The year 2024 marks a strong change in development thinking, shifting from "agricultural production" to "agricultural economy". The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has effectively implemented many programs such as the 1 million hectare high-quality specialized rice project and promoted exports to major markets such as the US, EU, and Japan.
Policies to support people in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, especially storm No. 3, have also been implemented synchronously and drastically. These solutions have helped minimize damage, stabilize production and ensure food supply.
Vision 2025
2025 will be a pivotal year, marking an important turning point for the agriculture and rural development sector in completing the 5-year Development Plan 2021-2025 and implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress.
The sector aims to achieve a GDP growth rate of 3.3-3.4%, an agricultural, forestry and fishery export turnover of 64-65 billion USD, with a trade surplus remaining high. At the same time, the rate of communes meeting new rural standards is expected to exceed 80%, with 325 district-level units meeting the standards or completing the task of building new rural areas. The sector also commits to maintaining a stable forest cover at 42.02% and increasing the rate of rural households using clean water to 60%.
The agricultural sector will also focus on building a sustainable value chain, from production, processing to consumption, associated with the development of logistics infrastructure. Improving the competitiveness of agricultural products will be prioritized through programs to support businesses, cooperatives and farming households in applying international standards, expanding growing area codes and packaging facilities.
