Exploiting potential, growing with agriculture
After 20 years of formation and development, from hardship to rise, today Dam Rong district has put on a new and prosperous appearance.
Traveling through the communes of Da R'sal, Ro Men, Da K'Nang, Phi Lieng... from afar, you can see lush green fruit gardens, modern greenhouses surrounding flat asphalt and concrete roads winding through the villages, creating a vivid picture.
People here not only maintain traditional coffee trees but also boldly switch to growing high-value economic crops such as durian, avocado and clean vegetables and fruits.
The application of modern farming techniques has helped improve the productivity and quality of agricultural products. Thereby, contributing to changing the face of this land in a spectacular way.
Currently, Dam Rong district is aiming to become a clean, high-quality and sustainable agricultural center. To realize this vision, the district has built and developed three key economic sub-regions, promoting sustainable economic growth.
Sub-region I includes the communes of Ro Men, Lieng S’rong, and Da R’sal. This area focuses on developing high-tech agriculture.
Key products include durian, avocado, orange, grapefruit, mulberry and cold-water fish. Advanced technology will be applied by localities to improve productivity and protect the environment.
Sub-region II includes Phi Lieng and Da K'nang communes, which will develop coffee, macadamia and vegetables, connecting more than 1,100 farming households, consuming 11,550 tons of agricultural products each year.
Sub-region III is Da Long, Da Tong, and Da M'rong communes, combining eco-tourism with agriculture, increasing the value of agricultural products and promoting tourism development.
A typical example is Mr. Phi Van Thin, who established Phi Lieng High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative in 2020, with the goal of producing clean agricultural products that meet export standards.
Initially, Mr. Thin's cooperative focused on high-value crops such as cherry tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers in greenhouses.
To meet market demands for quality, the cooperative has shifted to developing organic agriculture, applying technology to raise natural enemy insects instead of using plant protection chemicals.
According to Mr. Thin, Phi Lieng's cool climate is very suitable for growing bell peppers and tomatoes. In its development roadmap, in 2022, the cooperative has provided 280,000 seedlings and supported nearly 200 tons of cheap fertilizer for farmers.
In particular, the cooperative has purchased products for 7 members and 33 associated farming households, achieving an output of 600 tons of agricultural products, bringing in revenue of 15 billion VND/year. This success marks a strong revival of the cooperative and the farming community in the region.
Agriculture continues to develop sustainably
According to the People's Committee of Dam Rong district, currently, the planting area in the district has reached more than 23,000 hectares, an increase of 2,106 hectares compared to 2022.
Total food output reaches 18,600 tons/year. Average income value reaches 170 million VND/ha/year, an increase of 38 million VND compared to 2022.
Durian trees currently cover 3,015 hectares, with an output of 11,500 tons in the 2023-2024 crop year, bringing in a value of over VND500 billion. The area for sturgeon farming is 14.3 hectares, with an average output of 1,200 tons/year, with an economic value of up to VND216 billion.
High-tech agricultural models also show outstanding profits, with commercial vegetables and flowers reaching 850 - 1,000 million VND/ha/year.
The achievements are proof of the success in restructuring the agricultural sector of Dam Rong district.
According to the People's Committee of Dam Rong district, the locality is currently constantly improving and expanding effective agricultural production models. The district aims to develop sustainable agriculture, in line with modern trends.
The combination of high technology, organic production and ecotourism is gradually forming an advanced agricultural economy. These efforts not only meet the needs of domestic and international markets but also improve the quality of life of local people.
