Going to the market to prepare offerings for the full moon of July, Ms. Vu Thu Phuong (Yen Hoa ward, Hanoi) noticed the increase in green vegetable prices after the rainy and storm days. "The bundle of water spinach used to be only 7,000-10,000 VND, now it has increased to 15,000 VND. After the rain and storm, there are not many types of leafy vegetables, mainly ngot vegetables, mồng tơi vegetables, and seasonal tubers and fruits" - Ms. Phuong expressed.
Surveying some people's markets in Hanoi such as: Trung Kinh, Nam Trung Yen, Nghia Tan... green vegetables increased sharply in price compared to before. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong - a small trader at Trung Kinh market said: "Every vegetable is expensive, 1.5 times more expensive. Normally, the price of rau ngot is only 10,000 VND/bunch, now it has increased to 13,000 - 15,000 VND/bunch. There are not many types of vegetables to import and sell to the market, heavy rain is flooding, so leafy vegetables are greatly affected".
Not only buyers and sellers have to bear additional costs, but vegetable growers are also in a difficult position. Ms. Vu Thi Luan - a vegetable grower in Chuong My ward (Hanoi) brought vegetables to the inner city market in Hanoi for trading - shared that her field has many types that are waterlogged and rotten, crushed after the rain, leaving only a few beds that can be harvested. "Houseplant vegetables are all crushed by the rain, harvested from wherever they are sold. Today I also have to import more goods from outside, the price is more expensive than usual" - Ms. Luan said.
Traders believe that vegetable prices are still high, because most vegetable growing areas around Hanoi are damaged and need time to recover.
At supermarket systems, the supply of vegetables and tubers is still abundant, prices are stable. According to reporters' records, vegetable shelves at some large supermarket systems are full of vegetables. Many types are cheaper than in the market such as water spinach and Malabar spinach at the same price of 11,900 VND/500g, Northern napa cabbage 800g-1kg is priced at 12,700 VND... Meanwhile, some types of herbs, scallions, and sweet potato leaves are priced slightly higher from 2,000-3,000 VND.
However, according to a representative of a supermarket system, this fluctuation is only localized and occurs in people's markets in each area.
