The weather changes erratically
At this time, Dak Lak durian is in the fruit season. However, many durian gardens have only recently flowered.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Diem, residing in Thanh Xuan village, Ea Kenh commune, Krong Pac district, said that his family is trying to make a third batch of flowers after 2 batches of flowers that fell early. However, Mr. Diem is also very worried about the risk of crop failure due to unusual weather.
This stage is the most sensitive of durian trees. If the rain appears during the flowering period, the new flowers will rot, Mr. Diem shared.
With more than 10 years of experience in caring for durian trees, Mr. Huong Viet Loi, in Ea Kenh commune, Krong Pac district, said that the weather this year has changed erratically.
In February, durian trees began to bloom, and there were 3 unseasonal rains and prolonged cold in the area.
Mr. Loi said that unseasonal rains are rich in acid, causing flower buds to rot right from the crab eye stage.
"My garden has gone through 3 flower shoots but has not yet borne fruit. This leads to increased costs and the later harvest will last nearly two months instead of a month like every year, said Mr. Loi.
Mr. Pham Minh Tinh, in Ea Tu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city, also said that durian trees are very difficult to care for. According to him, the flowering and bearing process of durian depends largely on the impact of the weather.
"Lack or excess water can also cause flowers and durian to fall. Even when it is sunny, I water the floor well, but the trees are too hot, causing the flowers and durian to fall. Therefore, I am always on duty in the garden to monitor the temperature and promptly supplement the amount of water for the plants, Mr. Tinh added.
Production forecast to decrease by 30% compared to last year
According to Mr. Mai Dinh Tho, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Krong Pac Clean Agricultural Service Cooperative, the current weather has a negative impact on durian trees.
Currently, nearly 200 hectares of durian of the cooperative members are affected by erratic weather changes.
The cooperative's durian output in the next crop is forecast to decrease by about 30% compared to last year. To cope with the current weather situation, Mr. Tho has invited scientists to advise on technical solutions for farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Buon Ma Thuot city, said that recently, the area has had erratic monsoon.
Therefore, he said that there needs to be a specialized agency for comprehensive research to propose solutions in agriculture to adapt to climate change.
The City Farmers' Association also closely follows the instructions and recommendations of the Provincial Farmers' Association as well as the People's Committee of Buon Ma Thuot City.
From there, the association disseminated to the people to promptly grasp and take timely measures to handle situations arising in agricultural production.
Currently, people in the area have also proactively monitored and updated weather information; applied science and technology to cultivation to adapt to climate change.
Dak Lak leads the country in durian area with 37,381 hectares, output in 2024 reaches nearly 318,000 tons.
Of which, Krong Pac district is the durian capital of Dak Lak province with 9,600 hectares, expected output in 2025 to reach 100,000 tons.
