Nghia Hiep and Nghia My communes (Tu Nghia district); Duc Nhuan commune (Mo Duc district) are the largest chrysanthemum growing areas in the Central region. With less than 20 days left until Tet, the lack of traders has made flower growers worried.
While taking care of 600 pots of crystal chrysanthemums, Ms. Phuong in village 3, Duc Nhuan commune shared: "In previous years, at this time, traders came to ask to buy and deposit almost all of my family's flower garden. This year, the 600 pots of chrysanthemums are still intact, only a few people came to ask."
She added that she has grown flowers for many years but has never seen the consumption of Tet flowers as slow as this year.
Carefully picking each flower bud, Mr. Dinh Trinh Duoc in village 3, Duc Nhuan commune (Mo Duc) said that this year, despite the erratic weather, flower growers still try to take care of and fertilize the flowers in time to supply for Tet.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Duoc said: “This year, my family planted more than 2,500 pots of crystal chrysanthemums. Currently, only about 50% have been sold, mainly to regular customers. At this time every year, traders would be calling to place orders. People would come to the garden to see the chrysanthemums, but this year, sales have been unprecedentedly sluggish.”
According to local flower growers, the price of chrysanthemums sold in the garden this year has not changed compared to previous years. Currently, many gardeners are selling flowers at prices ranging from 130,000 VND to 1.3 million VND per pot, depending on the size of the pot from 50cm to 1m.
But, currently, traders are placing very few orders. Some gardens have only sold about 40% - 50%, and some gardens have not sold any pots yet.
All year round, people rely on Tet flowers to earn extra income, but in reality, flower growers are worried and constantly worry about "losing" Tet.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen - Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Hiep Commune, Tu Nghia District, said that in 2024, the whole commune will have 500 households growing Tet flowers, with about 250,000 pots of chrysanthemums of all kinds. Currently, traders have only come to order about 50% of the chrysanthemums grown by the people.
