Gardeners fear "bombs" as traders increase purchases of Tet flowers

Mekong Delta - Small deposits and fear of reduced purchasing power near Tet make gardeners wary as traders increase their purchases of Tet flowers.

According to the reporter, the Tet flower market this year has improved somewhat, with flower prices increasing from 5,000 - 20,000 VND/pot, depending on the type. The closer to Tet, the more traders come to the flower villages to buy, some people increase the number of orders by 2 - 3 times.

According to many gardeners, the price of Tet flowers this year has increased by 20-30% compared to last year. The reason is due to the impact of previous storms and rains, which has reduced the supply and quality of flowers. Traditional apricot flowers and ornamental plants are being sought after.

However, the small deposit and the fear of falling prices near Tet make many gardeners wary, even afraid of being "bombed" if they receive more orders from traders.

This season, Mr. Pham Van Ut (Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City) planted 4,000 pots of flowers of all kinds. Of these, 3,000 pots were ordered by traders, the rest were sold retail. Recently, traders called to order 1,500 more pots, making him both happy and worried.

Mr. Ut said: "The deposit they put in is less than every year, this year it's only 15 million VND, 5-6 million VND lower. The second time I called to order more but they didn't deposit yet so I didn't dare accept it. The remaining flowers are not enough for the order, if I accept it I'll have to buy it from another garden."

Unfavorable weather conditions, unseasonal rains and cold air have made it difficult to produce Tet flowers. Many gardeners have invested capital and deposits to build greenhouses, screen houses, and fertilizers to care for and protect ornamental plants.

For valuable trees like apricot trees, to avoid the fear of being "bombed", Mr. Tran Van Man (Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province) requires traders to deposit half the value of the tree before agreeing to sell.

Currently, more than 40 of Mr. Man's apricot trees are priced from 3 to 80 million VND, depending on size and shape. Traders have placed a deposit to purchase at an average price of 5 million VND/tree, a 15% increase in purchasing power compared to last year. For high-value apricot trees, Mr. Man will display and sell them during Tet.

To supply ornamental flowers for the Lunar New Year 2025, according to the plan, Chau Thanh A district, Hau Giang province plans to plant 217,250 pots of various flowers. Of which, there are 183,750 pots of marigolds, 17,400 pots of various chrysanthemums...

According to information from the Agricultural Extension Station of Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City, the number of ornamental flowers planted in the 2025 Tet crop is expected to reach over 200,000 baskets. The consumption of Tet flowers this year may increase by 5-8% compared to 2024.

In order to facilitate connections between traders, gardeners and ornamental flower producers, the People's Committee of Can Tho City has agreed in principle to assign the Department of Industry and Trade to organize the Tet flower market of At Ty year 2025. It is expected to be held from January 18 to 28, 2025 at Tay Do Square - Can Tho.

It is expected that there will be over 200 lots and stalls displaying and trading ornamental flowers, ornamental plants, and bonsai of gardeners, farmers, and small traders in Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta provinces.
