Dien Bien - Raising earthworms with waste to produce valuable organic fertilizer, Dien Bien farmers have earned billions of dong each year from this new agricultural model.

Located deep in Cang village, Muong Phang commune, Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province, the vermicompost production model of Mr. Trinh Van Khoe is becoming a bright spot in the application of high technology in agricultural production, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction and environmental protection.

With a scale of nearly 1,000m2 and modern technology, Mr. Khoe's facility not only provides high-quality fertilizers for local farmers but also meets the needs of businesses in the field of organic agriculture.

Mr. Khoe's vermicompost production model not only brings high economic efficiency but also creates many jobs for local people. Each month, the facility produces about 15 tons of vermicompost for the market, with a selling price of 4,500-5,000 VND/kg, bringing in revenue of about 1 billion VND/year - this is a significant source of income showing the development potential of this model.

According to Mr. Khoe, vermicompost is considered “black gold” for farmers. This is an organic fertilizer that is not only rich in nutrients but also contains many beneficial microorganisms, helping to improve soil quality, increase productivity and quality of crops. In particular, vermicompost also helps protect the environment by processing organic waste.

“Realizing the great benefits that vermicompost brings, I decided to invest and deploy activities from 2022 to present,” said Mr. Khoe.

The special thing is that the process of producing vermicompost is not complicated at all. People can completely make vermicompost at home by utilizing simple materials such as foam boxes and organic waste in daily life.

According to Mr. Khoe, to produce vermicompost, biomass is needed (worms and cocoons, habitat, vermicompost near the bed surface - can be purchased at seed production facilities). As for food for worms, there is a wide variety, from organic waste such as cold rice, leftover vegetables and fruits to agricultural waste.

Mr. Tran Van Son - co-founder of the vermicompost production model in Dien Bien said that after about a month of investment, people can sell vermicompost. With its outstanding advantages, the vermicompost production model is opening up many development prospects for Dien Bien agriculture.

“Currently, Dien Bien province is focusing on developing organic agriculture, so the demand for organic fertilizers is increasing. Producing vermicompost will help reduce transportation costs, create jobs for people and contribute to building a sustainable agriculture,” Mr. Son added.
