Many farmers growing ST25 rice in the Mekong Delta region are quite excited because this rice variety is currently priced at 11,000 - 13,000 VND/kg, about 3,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year.
This price is considered the highest to date, causing traders to search all over the provinces and cities in the West to buy.
After more than a month of traveling from Soc Trang to Hau Giang, Mr. Nguyen Van Thin (Long My district, Hau Giang province) purchased nearly 20 tons of ST25 rice.
It is known that Mr. Thin initially planned to purchase 30 tons of ST25 rice, however, due to the end of the season, the summer-autumn rice area being harvested is still small, combined with competition between traders, so the quantity decreased compared to the original.
"It's the end of the summer-autumn crop, there's not much rice left, and it's almost Tet. People are used to eating this type of rice, so they're buying it," said Mr. Thin.
Thanks to the application of technical measures and reduction of production costs, after harvesting 7 hectares of rice, Mr. Pham Van Cuong (Long My district, Hau Giang province) made a lot of profit.
Mr. Cuong said: "During the storm, the rice was affected, but fortunately, the rice price was high. This crop, I harvested a yield of 900kg, and after deducting expenses, I earned 38 million VND."
According to the review of the agricultural sector of Hau Giang province, the 2024 summer-autumn rice crop in the whole province was planted on over 74,000 hectares, and by early September, over 65,000 hectares had been harvested, with an estimated average yield of 6.2 tons/ha.
In Can Tho City, many autumn-winter rice fields in Thoi Lai, Vinh Thanh, and Co Do districts are in the ripening stage, and many rice varieties generally have high prices, making farmers excited.
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), domestic rice prices remain high and tend to increase because businesses are increasing purchases to ensure rice supplies for delivery to export partners.
Besides, in the Mekong Delta, the summer-autumn rice harvest is almost over, and the autumn-winter rice has just begun to flower, so there is not much rice left for sale, and prices are high.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 8 months of 2024, rice exports reached 6.16 million tons, worth nearly 3.85 billion USD, up 5.9% in volume and 21.7% in value over the same period last year.
