In the context of strong e-commerce development, Ho Chi Minh City is facing many challenges in controlling the quality of goods, especially in the online environment.
Ms. Ly Kim Chi - Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Food and Food Association, said that recently, the food industry has begun to see some products being advertised untruthfully on social networks, causing consumers to misunderstand the quality and uses. Although the number is not large, Ms. Chi said that there should be corrective measures from the beginning to avoid spreading.
"We always remind businesses to comply with legal regulations, from product information to circulation registration and advertising content. For violating businesses, we will recommend stricter sanctions to prevent re-offending" - Ms. Chi emphasized.
In the face of the strong development of e-commerce, Ho Chi Minh City has identified building a transparent and safe business environment as an important task to protect consumers and ensure healthy competition.
According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Huy - Deputy Head of the Market Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, the management of goods quality in the online environment is currently facing many difficulties due to anonymousness, cross-border and rapid development of technology.
Violators often use fake accounts, do not register for business, take advantage of social networks to make transactions, making it difficult for authorities to investigate and handle.
According to statistics from the Market Management Department, from 2024 to May 2025, Ho Chi Minh City has detected and handled 393 violations in the field of e-commerce, temporarily detaining nearly 129,000 violating products such as jewelry, clothes, food, cosmetics... with a total value of more than 8.8 billion VND. The total amount of administrative fines for violations is up to more than 8 billion VND.
Faced with the above situation, the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City has directed market management forces to launch a peak period from June 15 to fight, detect and repel smuggling, trade fraud, production and circulation of counterfeit goods, counterfeit goods, goods of unknown origin, copyright and intellectual property violations.
Not only stopping at handling violations in the online environment, market management forces are also required to increase surprise inspections at hot spots such as unit markets, supermarkets, shopping malls, production facilities and warehouses. The goal is to promptly detect and prevent unsafe food circulation on the market.
At the same time, Ho Chi Minh City also promotes coordination programs with the Department of Industry and Trade, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of provinces and cities with a large supply of agricultural products and food to the city. This is to strictly control the source of goods, contributing to improving the quality of food to consumers.
Interdisciplinary forces are also mobilized to check gateways to enter and exit the city, especially documents related to the origin and destination of goods, animal quarantine certificates and conditions for ensuring food safety during transportation and preservation.
